By day, Douglas Flamm is a seller of rare and art books on the upper East Side. But when he gets home to Brooklyn Heights, the bespectacled 38-year-old dons another identity - master homebrewer. (All photos by Alexander Nazaryan)
Flamm, who bears a more-than-passing resemblance to Clark Kent, called brewing beer in his kitchen a ?labor of love.?
But at April?s Brooklyn Wort competition, the judges called it something else - naming his ?Moyster,? a stout brewed with oysters, the best of the field.
The Brooklyn Wort is a twice-annual home brewing competition whose judges include representatives from local beer-makers like Brooklyn Brewery and Kelso.
Flamm said that he was partly inspired to create an oyster-flavored beer after reading Mark Kurlansky?s popular ?The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell.?
He noted that there?s been a ?long history between oysters and beer,? which he wanted to honor with his unusual creation.
Flamm said that all of his beers are named by his son and daughter, who are 7 and 10.
And in this bookish family, the beers often have bookish names - for example, one of his brews is called ?Beater,? for a position in the Harry Potter sport Quidditch. It?s a tasty Belgian beer with notes of citrus.
Though Flamm tries to make his hobby a family affair, he acknowledged the lengthy process of brewing takes over the kitchen ? and stinks up the house.
?[My wife] usually takes the kids out for a while,? he admitted.
Unlike most homebrewers, many of whom are twentysomething hipsters, Flamm came to brewing in his late 30s.
Originally a seller of art books, he shuttered his own business after the 9/11 attacks. Soon he started working at Ursus, which has sold high-end art and rare books on Madison Ave. since 1972.
hough his days are spent uptown, he identifies himself with Brooklyn?s do-it-yourself, keep-it-local spirit.
?I think Brooklyn is really enjoying a great food and drink movement ? it is getting back to the homemade and the search for excellence in all that we eat and drink,? he said.
When asked if he would ever combine his two passions into a bookstore-bar, Flamm hemmed and hawed before admitting the obvious: ?It would be fun.?
