ViSalus Shakes Work for Those with Thyroid Issues, Synthroid

The ViSalus, Body By Vi Challenge is safe and recommended for people who have gained weight because of thyroid issues and who are using Synthroid to control their thyroid.

Our Visalus shakes can be used with synthroid. We have many people on our Visalus shakes that have over active, inactive, and surgically removed thyroid.

Weight gain associated with thyroid issues and synthroid can be overcome with Visalus shakes.

There is a lot of misinformation and confusion about soy in the marketplace today. In countries where consumption of soy is high (like Japan) the populations are healthier and have fewer health issues than in America today. So we know that there is misinformation, and facts being taken out of context.

Of the concerns over soy, there are a few common ones. First, is referring to raw soybeans, that can contain a form of phytic acid that can block certain minerals absorption. However, that is based on massive consumption quantities, and of the raw soybean and only occurs in those animals that lack the digestive enzyme phytase. It is only an issue for people who consume those foods to get minerals in their diet, and in massive quantities.

DIGESTIVE ENZYME
The issue is in developing countries, and may have a genetic basis as well because they are lacking the digestive enzyme (which can be supplemented and therefore alleviate the concern). It is not an issue for our products because of how we process the ingredients.

ISOFLAVONES GENISTEIN AND DADZEIN
The second common concern with soy are due to some of the components of soy, particularly the isoflavones genistein and dadzein which can affect and inhibit thyroid peroxidase which is necessary for the production of T3 and T4. Thus there is some evidence that it could lead to thryoid enlargement (Goiter) . Our soy has been processed to remove the isoflavones, so this is not an issue.

Don?t let your thyroid or synthroid issues control you ? Visalus may be an option. Try the 90 Day Body By Vi Challenge.

ESTROGEN LEVEL
A third common concern about soy is the effect it may have on estrogen levels in the body. This is again due to the isoflavones, which we have had removed. So this is a non-issue. Another important note is that many menopausal women do supplement with isoflavones, as it has been shown to help them experience fewer side effects of menopause.

NON GMO
Lastly, our Soy is not genetically modified (it is non-GMO). Many people worry about genetically modified soy, and if any of the ingredients got altered in the breeding process. We use the most natural form we can get, that has not been genetically modified.

We use soy because it is a complete protein, easily digested, can build lean muscle equal to (if not slightly better) than soy, and adequate consumption of soy in the diet can help the body reduce cholesterol and the c-reactive protein an indicator of inflammation and heart disease.

The Visalus product can help you with controlling your weight and is safe for use with people who have thyroid issues. The Body By Vi Challenge can work hand in hand with your synthroid use to help you maintain your desired weight. The bottom line is your health ??

Bottom Line - Celeb real estate: Oprah lists NYC penthouse

By Erika Riggs, Zillow

What's up in the world of celebrity real estate? Oprah -- or buddy Gayle King -- is selling a modern penthouse, and Patricia Arquette sold her home for a loss.

Oprah lists New York penthouse

Zillow

Quite the view from the 36th floor.

Zillow

Neat as a pin? Has anyone actually lived here?

In the world of celebrity real estate, stars buy homes through trusts in LLCs in an effort to cut the paper trail leading to their name.

Despite their best efforts, it's possible to figure out who the real owner of a mansion or penthouse is with a little sleuthing.

Such is the case with a posh Manhattan penthouse for sale. In 2008, it was reported that former news anchor and Oprah Winfrey's best bud Gayle King bought a 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath apartment in the new Midtown tower Place 57.

After all was said and done, it appeared that the home was not purchased by King, but by the talk show diva herself for $7.1 million.

Who actually lived there is up for debate, but as for now, the penthouse is for sale for $7.9 million and appears to be vacant.

Finished in 2006, Place 57 has condos from $1.47 million to $7-plus million. Oprah's penthouse sits on the 36th floor and features 2,530 square feet of wall-to-ceiling windowed space as well as a 768-square-foot terrace.

The modern space features a "triangle-shaped" living room, high-end kitchen, dining area, and two bedrooms, one with an attached bathroom. The master suite has three walk-in closets, a jetted tub and sleek shower.

Patricia Arquette sells vine-covered home

Zillow

Fair to call this house ivy league?

Zillow

You'd think a "Medium" could have predicted the market better.

Celebrity real estate, like regular real estate, usually hits the market in the aftermath of divorce proceedings.

Patricia Arquette and former husband Thomas Jane listed their home for sale in Mid-Wilshire, Los Angeles after they announced their divorce. First listed on the market in June 2011, Arquette's home recently sold for $2.775 million ? 20 percent less than the original asking price, according to the Real Estalker.

Arquette, best known for her role in TV's "Medium," which aired 2005 through 2011, purchased the vine-covered home in 2003 with Jane for $2.25 million. Arquette and Jane ? of TV series "Hung" ? were married in 2006, they divorced in late 2010.

Built in 1929, Arquette's former home is a stucco "Rennaisance Revival" home covered in vines and filled with 1920s details. The 4-bedroom, 5-bath home has hand-painted ceilings and stained glass windows as well as chef's kitchen with inlaid limestone tile. Situated on a one-third acre lot, the home also has a pool and outdoor living area with barbeque.

See more photos of Patricia Arquette's former home here.

Google's Get Your Business Online in Emerging Markets - Part 1 ...

SEO for online businesses in India, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana

Google?s Get Your Business Online initiative is having far-reaching impacts beyond simply getting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the developed world online that do not already have a web presence. The initiative has been implemented in emerging markets as well, bringing online capability, SEO potential, and economic opportunity to specific countries in the developing world, particularly in Africa and Central Asia. I discussed Google?s Get Your Business Online initiative in an International Business Times piece yesterday where I described the background of the initiative, its offerings, and the opportunity for SEO for the many new businesses that will find themselves online in these developed markets. Now, with its expansion into emerging markets, it is a promising development for several other reasons.

The first promising aspect is that these efforts will boost commerce in these countries in both the short and long-term. Like their counter-part initiatives in North America and Europe, giving companies the nudge online will widen their exposure and allow them to reach more customers thus growing their businesses. Many of these companies are at a pivotal point and this assistance will give them the boost to turn the corner and become sustaining, viable operations.

Secondly, the impact the companies that do get online due to the initiative in the developing countries will have a much greater relative impact on their economies than the impact made by participating businesses in North America and Europe. This does not place the importance of one over the other, but affirms the true value of the initiative to act as a catalyst in the developing world. Most of these businesses will be in a more favorable position to grow and expand their operations as they establish a larger customer-base. The larger the collection of businesses that do the program, gain online exposure, and grow revenue, the greater the impact of this influx of stronger, more profitable SMEs will be on the local economies.

SEO companies that specialize in paid search and international search engine optimization can also benefit from this growing sector of SMEs. Many of these SMEs may have customer-bases that will extend beyond their national borders for the first time, thus requiring expert assistance in driving targeted traffic. Check back on Monday for the rest of my thoughts on the economic impact of this initiative in specialized emerging markets.

This Monday, Jan. 23, 2012 still file photo taken from video shows Harvard biomedical engineering professor David Edwards, creator of AeroShot, during an interview at Breathable Foods Lab, Inc., in Cambridge, Mass. The Food and Drug Administration will investigate the safety and legality of the product, an inhalable caffeine packed in a lipstick-sized canister. (AP Photo/Rodrique Ngowi, File)

BOSTON (AP) ? U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials plan to investigate whether inhalable caffeine sold in lipstick-sized canisters is safe for consumers and if its manufacturer was right to brand it as a dietary supplement.

AeroShot went on the market late last month in Massachusetts and New York, and it's also available in France. Consumers put one end of the canister in their mouths and breathe in, releasing a fine powder that dissolves almost instantly.

Each grey-and-yellow plastic canister contains B vitamins, plus 100 milligrams of caffeine powder, about the equivalent of the caffeine in a large cup of coffee.

AeroShot inventor, Harvard biomedical engineering professor David Edwards, says the product is safe and doesn't contain taurine and other common additives used to enhance the caffeine effect in energy drinks.

AeroShot didn't require FDA review before hitting the U.S. market because it's sold as a dietary supplement. But New York's U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said he met with FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg and she agreed to review the safety and legality of AeroShot.

"I am worried about how a product like this impacts kids and teens, who are particularly vulnerable to overusing a product that allows one to take hit after hit after hit, in rapid succession," Schumer said.

The senator on Sunday planned to announce the AeroShot review.

Meanwhile, an FDA official who was at the meeting confirmed the decision, telling The Associated Press that the review will include a study of the law to determine whether AeroShot qualifies as a dietary supplement. The product will also be tested to figure out whether it's safe for consumption, the official said.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because that official was not authorized to discuss the matter.

Schumer pressed the FDA in December to review AeroShot, saying he fears that it will be used as a club drug so that young people can keep going until they drop. He cited incidents that occurred last year when students looking for a quick and cheap buzz began consuming caffeine-packed alcoholic drinks they dubbed "blackout in a can" because of their potency.

Pressure from the senator and others helped persuade the FDA to stop the marketing, distribution and sale of these beverages, including Four Loko.

"We need to make sure that AeroShot does not become the next Four Loko by facilitating dangerous levels of drinking among teenagers and college students," Schumer said in a statement.

Breathable Foods Inc., which makes AeroShot in France, says the product is different from the potent beverages. The company says that it's not targeting anyone under 18 and that AeroShot safely delivers caffeine into the mouth, just like coffee does.

A single unit costs $2.99 at convenience stores, mom-and-pops, and liquor and online stores. The product packaging warns people not to consume more than three AeroShots a day.

"When used in accordance with its label, AeroShot provides a safe shot of caffeine and B vitamins for ingestion," the manufacturer says on its website. "Caffeine has been proven to offer a variety of potential benefits for health to individuals when consumed in moderation, from providing energy to enhancing attention and focus."

AeroShot, the flagship product of Cambridge, Mass.-based Breathable Foods, is the product of a conversation that Edwards had with celebrity French chef Thierry Marks over lunch in the summer of 2007.

The first venture Edwards worked on with Harvard students was the breathable chocolate, called Le Whif. Now he's preparing to promote a product called Le Whaf, which involves putting food and drinks in futuristic-looking glass bowls and turning them into low calorie clouds of flavor.

Nora Zelevansky: Project Runway All Stars Recap: Big Enough For Broadway!

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Episode 7 of Lifetime's "Project Runway All Stars."

There are only seven designers left on "Project Runway All Stars" and the pressure is building ... or at least they keep telling us that.

This week's episode begins with Jerell's deep thoughts about Rami's elimination the week before (or for him probably the night before): "The fact that he's gone is a bit of a game changer," says Jerell, who quickly recovers. "Can't be mad at that because eventually they all have to go, so I can get my check." Always with the sass, that guy.

The designers meet their lovely host Angela Lindvall at Circle in the Square theater, which Austin describes as representing "the pulse of New York in Times Square." Sure. If you think the city's biggest tourist trap is its heart and soul then Time Square is definitely it.

But who can blame Austin, who seems to experience this challenge through the world's most wonderful rose colored glasses? He describes "the world of theater" as full of illusion and fantasy. He adds, "And that excites me." We know Austin. We can tell. And it's sort of cute.

Famous composer Stephen Schwartz arrives on the scene next to Angela to describe the challenge: It's a "'Project Runway' First!" per usual. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the musical "Godspell," the designers will create separates for a very ostentatious wealthy female character who steals from the poor to show off her wealth. There should be a quirky feel because the items come from the other characters, but basically she should look rich and a little evil.

"The winner ... will have his or her design featured in the new Broadway production of 'Godspell' and a bio in the program," Schwartz explains. The designers ooh and ahh, but I'm not really buying the enthusiasm from them. Maybe they're just a little burnt out.

"To have your bio in a playbill on Broadway is pretty major," raves Mondo. I feel like the producers made him say that. He also adds, "Everyone thinks about Broadway -- lights and sequins and fringe, but it's difficult."

They're given $200 and 30 minutes to sketch in the theater. Austin says he appreciates the time to "absorb the magic of the room." He's like freaking out with excitement, which makes up for everyone else's mellow response.

"Break a leg!" calls Angela, as they leave for Mood. Because that's what they say in the theater.

In The Mood!
Austin enthuses, "I want to go for some fabric that will just speak ... opulence, conspicuous consumption, richness, so I'm thinking a fabulous brocade."

Kara is making a fur stole, but she's sort of freaking out.

"I love Kara so much and part of what I love about her is her emotional roller coaster," comments Austin.

Then, suddenly, this is the first time I realize that they don't have a mentor at Mood on this series. On the regular show, Tim comes along, but there's no Joanna Coles here. Interesting. Oh well.

Back at The Workroom
Kenley is also using brocade for a jacket that "ties all the separates in." She's debating silver versus red.

Jerell says he's using silver and gold lam?.

Kara says, "I'm hoping the judges notice the clean lines. It's going to be a sort of simple chic aesthetic." Wait. Is it me or is that almost exactly what she said last week when she bombed and they compared her outfit to mall wear?

As usual, Mila is grumpy about the love fest going on around her. "I've noticed a lot of this sort of unnecessarily over-complimentary love for each other's designs and now it's like crazy between Kara and Kenley," she says. "If one gets eliminated, they might have a breakdown."

Back to Austin, where there's nothing but blue skies and sunshine: "I'm excited about the sheer possibility of having a Broadway debut!" he says. He's so thrilled that he actually uses the word "ensemble." I'm loving him!

Next, Mondo gives the producers this episode's mandatory Neiman Marcus plug: "The Neiman Marcus accessory wall has everything you can think of!" We know. It's amaaaaazing. (That's me virtually rolling my eyes again.)

Joanna Coles ("JC" to us) comes in for critiques and though they make her say, once again, that this is the most exciting challenge yet, she's really starting to grow on me. I like how she comes in all friendly, then makes some super cutting, but usually correct assessment and then walks away before the designers have time to realize what's happened. It's sort of brilliant.

First, she approaches our theater crazed contestant: "Austin, it looks like you robbed a bank with all this gold and silver," she remarks. He says that he immediately thought of Marie Antoinette. She nods and continues, "I love it because ... right now it's hideous, but you're going to turn it into something fabulous. Right, Austin?" See? It seemed like they were on the same page, but then suddenly they're not. He's flustered. She's amazing.

To Kara she says, "This is not necessarily as ambitious as you need to be to be an 'All Star.'" To the camera, the emotional designer cries: "We're pushing ourselves so hard everyday."

Mila is considering various kind of skirts with JC. About one idea, she says, "It's not very Mila." Uh oh. We've started talking in the third person. They decide that a pencil skirt might work.

Mondo is inspired by this idea of the character's father's old smoking jacket. Says JC, "The deceitful character is played out brilliantly in this. I just hope it's dramatic enough from a distance." Lots of cool patterns, as usual.

Jerell is making a coat that stops at the waste with an over-sized cuff. "In this case, the jacket is a piece of jewelry," he explains. At least Michael isn't making the same one this week.

To Kenley, JC comments, "I'm in shock. Is this the first week we don't have polka dots?" I love this woman. "These are like signature thrift store pieces," says Kenley. I'm confused -- did she not understand the challenge? They said it should look expensive ... not used.

"Break a leg!" JC calls out, as she leaves the workroom. Because that's what they say in the theater.

Mondo isn't liking his look; he thinks it looks heavy and overworked, but I think it looks kind of on point. He's just feeling insecure because he kinda tanked the last challenge. "Cynthia Rowley was so disgusted with my look that she didn't even know what to say," he laments. "It's hard for me to put my heart on the line again." Suddenly, I feel like I'm watching "The Bachelor." Are you ready to find love again, Mondo? I know you've been hurt before. But I digress. I still think Mondo will probably win this whole thing.

Kenley has all the overblown confidence that Mondo lacks: "I don't make mediocre half-ass pieces," she says. "It must be so annoying for those other designers." It is annoying to be around her, I imagine. But not for the reasons she thinks.

Runway Day
Austin doesn't have time to finish the way that he needs to and he freaks out at Jerell a little for stealing his sewing machine.

"Jerell did not take your machine," says Jerell. What is with the third person stuff this week?

Mondo thinks "Kara's look looked like her model was a tube of lipstick. She pushed it all the way to the edge, but she didn't push it over."

Austin says Michael's look is almost mother of the bride. (It's kind of a short skirt for MOB, but whatev.)

About Mila's oufit, Jerell says, "It's kinda like a girl who can't get into the club." Ruh roh.

Let The Show Begin
The usual judges (Georgina Chapman and Isaac Mizrahi) are joined by the star of Tony Award winning musical "Anything Goes," Sutton Foster.

Jerell says, "She's adorable." She does look nice.

Down the runway, things are looking pretty good. This week there is really nothing so awful that it's a definite tank. Kenley and Michael both have headpieces to match their outfits. Austin describes his look as, "Decadent aristocrat with rocker flea market glamour." I don't know if his enthusiasm is just infectious, but I kind of love that description.

"Job well done, Jerell," says JERELL. OMG. Stop it with the third person!

I'm TOTALLY into Mondo's outfit. It's so cool. It's awesome and over-the-top and gold sparkly and amazing. It's costume, it's fashion, it's bohemian -- to me it's everything in one!

Mila says her piece has a sense of humor. I am not liking the weird asymmetrical skirt. Even through the lens of TV, it looks cheap. Mila says she pushed outside her box. (That's low hanging fruit, but I won't even make the dirty joke.)

Critique
Jerell is safe, but everyone else has the highest and lowest scores.

For Michael, Georgina says, "I wish it was slightly more eccentric." Isaac adds, "Congratulations to you. That color to me is ... very difficult."

Kenley's outfit is not a flop, but they think she missed the mark on the challenge, as evidenced by her earlier quote about thrift stores. Angela says she didn't listen, which doesn't surprise me. I feel like that could be a common problem with her. Isaac says, "You are really flying in our faces right here." But then he adds, "The black shoe goes like too East Village to me. Like she doesn't live in the East Village; she lives in a doorway in the East Village." Georgina says the jacket is cut beautifully. Sutton says, "The patterns muddle it. On stage it would blend as opposed to pop."

Starstruck Austin gets s mercifully good review. "You managed to keep it modern," says Georgina. (I feel like I often agree with her.) Isaac says it borders on being a little too young for the "Austin Starlet" customer.

"It's 'Austin Scarlett' not 'starlet,'" the designer corrects. Awkwaaaard.

Anyway, Mila's outfit doesn't go over. Isaac says he likes the top and "I sort of like the bottom, but together for me it doesn't work." Sutton agrees, saying sheepishly, "It feels a little gaudy." (They get snarkier during the private deliberation. Isaac says, "She looks like she uses drugs this girl." Adds Sutton, "I keep thinking of "Pretty Woman" before she gets pretty.")

Mondo says his woman's secret is this idea of this old smoking jacket that she has from her dad and that she pulls everything else from the places she's been. "What's so great is the layering of the fabrics," says Georgina. The judges all gasp in pleasure when the jacket is removed. Georgina says he needs to "refine the length," but they clearly love it. (In fact, Isaac later says that it looks like it took two weeks instead of one day.)

To Kara, Angela says, "I love the red pop, however the silver bow in the front gets very bulky." I suddenly feel like she's "active listening" like in therapy. Lead with a compliment, then get honest! "For me this is the best you've done," says Isaac. "It needs to be developed a bit." That's not good news. During deliberation Isaac says, "I thought this was her best challenge to date, but I didn't like it."

Um. I guess that sort of seals the deal. I mean, if you don't like her best work, then where can you go from there?

With the designers back on the runway, Angela says, "Your looks were very theatrical, but were they big enough for Broadway?" Good question, Angie.

The Winner: It's between Mondo and Austin and Mondo wins. I'm almost sad for Austin because he wanted this so badly, but I guess Mondo has his mojo back, which is good. Now I feel like Austin's dream is to be a costume designer. Do it, man!

Going Home: It's between Mila and Kara, but we know what's to come. Kara is sent home. They say they're proud of her, but it seems sort of in a sad kind of way.

"I don't know that this was the best challenge for me," Kara says in the talking head afterward. Um, yeah, Kara. You got sent home. I think not.

7 Benefits of Strategic Planning

7 Benefits of Strategic Planning

Why is strategic planning so important and why must it be strategic planningdone in concert with a strategy? For many years businesses were successful because they had a presence in a small market with little competition. Even if they had direct competition, there was often enough business to go around so that everybody could survive. However, business today gets done in a global marketplace. Change is occurring at an unprecedented pace. Time and distance continue to become less and less relevant thanks in great part to the explosive growth of technology and the Internet.

There was a time when strategic planning was done only by the largest companies. Now it is simply a requirement for all business to survive. Business leaders must be constantly looking ahead, anticipating change, and developing a strategy to proactively and successfully navigate through the today?s global marketplace. Without strategic planning, businesses simply drift, and are always reacting to the pressure of the day.

For many business owners and leaders, creating a vision, company values, and a strategic plan can be a daunting task for reasons like time, energy, commitment and lack of experience. It requires business leaders to accept that yesterday?s success does not ensure success in the future. It also requires challenging the status quo, changing behaviors, implementing new procedures, hiring different people, and putting new systems in place in order to deliver on the strategy.

strategic-plan-button-small

So why should companies go through all the hard work of creating a vision, establishing values and formulating a strategy? The answer is simple: combining a good strategic plan and great results in an organization with focus, accountability and more time for the important activities. Here are a few key benefits of good planning and great execution:

  1. Better Decisions - Information communicated through vision and strategy allows people to make the best decisions (hiring and rewarding the right people, adopting and developing the right systems, making the right investments, etc.).
  2. Increased Energy ? Resulting from rallying behind a cause, and elimination of conflict and confusion of priorities.
  3. Increased Capacity ? People are focused on what is important and less concerned about what isn?t.
  4. Improved Customer Satisfaction ? A true test of value and leads to higher retention and growth.
  5. Competitive Advantage ? Doing what you do better than others.
  6. Better Solutions ? Uncovering the enormous intellectual and creative capacity of an organization that collectively works toward solutions rather than a relying on select few.
  7. Market Recognition ? Over time you can ?own? a position and space in the marketplace.

Machiavelli said, ?The one who adapts his policy to the times prospers, and likewise the one whose policy clashes with the demands of the times does not.? Since we cannot control where the world is going, the best we can do is try to figure out where it is likely to go and how we might prosper in it. This is best accomplished by the utilization of strategic planning. The long-term view of where we think things will end up and how we will position ourselves to capitalize on it is what strategic planning is all about.

A properly orchestrated strategic planning process should help your business identify multiple future scenarios and give you strategies to address the ?demands of the times? whatever they may be. Dental And Vision Insurance ? Two Types Of Very Personal ...

For most of us, we come across insurances on rare occasions in out lives. We usually take out something that will cover our lives when we have something worth covering, like getting married or starting a family.

And we will sometimes take out insurances for things, like buildings and our property.

Somewhere down the list of priorities for our monthly outgoings, is the need to protect not just our lives but also some key elements of our health. Whilst full health insurance is important as well, two smaller types of insurance are very vital to our wellbeing and ability to enjoy our lives to the full.

So, How Important Is Dental And Vision Insurance?

These are two critical types of insurance that protects people and their families. Whilst they may seem somewhat different, you might be surprised to find how similar dental and vision insurance is

Both of them are focused on ensuring that two of the most important parts of your body get their regular tune-ups, not to say check-overs.

That dental and vision insurance is often available from similar providers, shows that of all the different types of insurance you can spend your money on, there is a real belief that dental and vision health are two of the most important health measures for most of us.

What?s The Point Of Dental And Vision Insurance

One of the most important things about our dental and visual health is that, with regular attention, we can keep it pretty much under control. Our teeth and gums, as well as our eyes are vulnerable to disease, just like the rest of our bodies, but can be easily managed, with the expert advice that dentists and opticians can provide.

You see, dental and vision insurance concentrates more on prevention than cure ? though the specialists in the field deal with this too! Having a good policy for both of these will always be a great investment as they will not only prevent nasty bills, but they will encourage regular inspections of your mouth and teeth.

If you are working, you may well find that your employer will provide either free or discounted dental and vision insurance. If you are able to take advantage of this it might well be one of the best things you can do.

Remember, your visual and oral health are very important (just imagine what it might be with problems in those areas), so a sound dental and vision insurance policy might be worth the investment as soon as you like!

Oklahoma women fall 73-55 to No. 2 Connecticut (AP)

NORMAN, Okla. ? Twice in a six-game stretch, Oklahoma faced the nation's top-ranked team and wilted quickly after facing adversity.

When No. 2 Connecticut rolled into town and got out to a big lead, at least coach Sherri Coale saw some progress: Her team put up a fight.

Tiffany Hayes scored 23 points, Bria Hartley added 20 and the Huskies beat Oklahoma 73-55 on Monday night for their 12th straight victory.

The Huskies never trailed on their way to moving to 10-0 all-time in the series, which had become an annual tradition around Valentine's Day but is set to end after this meeting. Connecticut appeared ready to run away with it in the first 7 minutes but then had to withstand a series of rallies by Oklahoma (16-8).

"It's never OK ? never OK ? to lose on your home floor but I am proud of the growth that I saw," Coale said. "We found some passion and we found some fighters."

The Huskies (24-2) led 19-4 before two-time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant even made it to his seat near courtside, just over 7 minutes into the first half. Stefanie Dolson scored with her left hand under the basket soon after to make it a 17-point lead with 11:57 to go before halftime, and the Huskies seemed to be on their way to duplicating last season's 41-point blowout last season in Hartford.

Instead, Whitney Hand ignited the first in a series of comeback bids. Oklahoma got the lead down to five before halftime, then answered another Connecticut run in the second half by scoring seven straight points.

It wasn't until after a 10-0 run by the Huskies over the final 5 minutes that the game was out of reach.

"I'm really proud that we didn't give up and we fought and fought and fought and didn't stop fighting the whole game," Hand said. "I was really proud of everybody."

It wasn't that way when Baylor played at the Lloyd Noble Center on Jan. 26. The Bears also built a quick 17-point lead, then the Sooners made one charge to get back within six. When Baylor responded, Oklahoma wilted and ended up losing by 31 points.

The Sooners lost to the Bears by 37 in a rematch last week.

"I just really felt like there were times on the court when it was just fun and you didn't really look at the scoreboard," Hand said. "That was kind of our goal, and we got it to nine and I could have sworn we would have won but obviously we didn't."

Hand played 40 minutes and led Oklahoma with 18 points, but she was the only one of the Sooners who could score with regularity against the nation's top defense.

Aaryn Ellenberg, once the Sooners' most dangerous scorer, continued a prolonged slump by missing eight of her first nine shots. She has shot 16 for 75 (21 percent) over the last seven games ? a stretch included the two Baylor games.

The Huskies are the only team with a better field-goal percentage defense than the Bears, allowing opponents to shoot only 29.6 percent and average 44.4 points.

Oklahoma exceeded both of those marks but still shot only 34.5 percent. The Sooners were 3 for 14 from 3-point range and are 24 for 105 (23 percent) over the same seven-game stretch.

"We've got to get that 3 element back in our offense. We have to," Coale said. "It's such a piece of our identity."

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Stefanie Dolson contributed 10 points apiece in Connecticut's final nonconference test before a final four-game run that will decide the Big East title. It could come down to a Feb. 27 game against No. 4 Notre Dame in Hartford, Conn.

The teams are tied for the conference lead at 11-1 after the Irish were upset by West Virginia on Sunday.

"The No. 1 goal always, every year is to win the regular season championship. ... In order for us to do that, we have to win every game," Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma said. "So, we've kind of been in a playoff mode every game since we played at South Bend. So, that doesn't change anything for us."

Hand scored the first seven points in an 11-0 first-half run, and the Sooners quickly got themselves into the bonus by drawing three fouls against Mosqueda-Lewis in an 82-second span.

Jelena Cerina's layup in the final minute of the first half got Oklahoma within 33-28 before Connecticut scored the final four points before halftime.

The Huskies didn't let it stay close for long.

Hayes had two layups, stealing an outlet pass in between, to spark a string of eight straight points that restored Connecticut's lead to 45-30 in the first 3 minutes after halftime.

Mosqueda-Lewis turned away an Oklahoma comeback bid by hitting consecutive jumpers before Hayes' fastbreak layup pushed the lead to 51-35 with 13:10 remaining. The Sooners again got within single digits with a run of seven straight points finished by Hand's free throws with just under 6 minutes left, only to have the Huskies answer it a few moments later.

Dolson scored from the right block, Mosqueda-Lewis hit a 3-pointer and Hartley converted a fastbreak layup to draw a timeout from Coale. Many in the crowd of nearly 6,300 drawn for the annual "Pack the Place Pink" breast cancer awareness game headed out with 2:16 remaining and Connecticut leading 66-50.

"We kept our heads," Hayes said. "We'd just come down, just run our stuff, not let them make us go too fast and I think that's what helped us out."

No public memorial for Whitney Houston

Houston's body was carried to a New Jersey funeral home in a gold hearse.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Singer Whitney Houston's family has decided against a public memorial for her at a New Jersey sports arena, and will hold an invitation-only service at the church where she first sang publicly, and where her mother, singer Cissy Houston, still attends services.

On Monday, it was reported that the Houston family was considering a wake and funeral at Newark's Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils and temporarily of the New Jersey Nets. That facility can seat up to 20,000.

But Carolyn Whigham, owner of the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, told?the press?that there will be no wake, and instead a private funeral at noon Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, where Houston first publicly showcased her powerful voice.

"(The family has) shared her for 30-some years with the city, with the state, with the world," Whigham told the AP. "?This is their time now for their farewell."

The church seats about 2,000, but those without invitations will not be admitted. Whigham also said the family had completed arrangements and that no details would be released. There will be no public viewing of any kind.

Although originally it was said that no cameras would be allowed in the church, later on Tuesday it was announced that the service would be filmed, with just one camera allowed inside.

Houston's body was carried to the funeral home Monday afternoon in a golden hearse. Fans lined the streets to watch.

Flowers and notes have been left at the church, including?one?referencing one of?Houston's top hits, "I Will Always Love You," reading "To Whitney Houston and the entire Houston family: Newark loves you and will always love you.

Houston began singing solos in the church at age 11, around 1974, following in the footsteps of her Grammy-winning mother.

"I didn't attend that much then, but my wife used to attend,"?church member Bob Thomas told msnbc partner theGrio.com. "And my wife would tell me all the time about this young kid who could sing so great."

Houston, 48, was found unconscious and submerged in a bathtub in her room at the Beverly Hills Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., Saturday afternoon. An autopsy was performed, but Los Angeles assistant chief coroner Ed Winter said on Monday that a cause of death will not be announced until the results of?toxicology tests are received, which could take weeks.

Winter would not comment on reports of prescription drug bottles being found in Houston's room.

Will: ???Strongest Republican candidate has the last name ???Romney??? and the first name ???not??? [VIDEO] (Daily Caller)

On Sunday?s ?This Week? on ABC, George Will noted that the tough week former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had, with losses in Missouri, Colorado and Minnesota, continues the same narrative that has been played out throughout this Republican nomination process.

?Another week and the narrative is unchanged,? Will said. ?The strongest Republican candidate has the last name ?Romney? and the first name ?not.? This week, the ?not Romney? is [Rick] Santorum. Romney carried no counties in Minnesota, lost 48 out of 64 counties in Colorado. In Missouri, where five times more people voted than in Colorado and Minnesota combined, Romney loses to 2-to-1 to Santorum. So it looks as though it is like a binary choice has emerged.?

Will noted a Rasmussen poll in which Romney is trailing President Barack Obama, whereas his competitor, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, is tied. He said this shows some vulnerabilities with the ?inevitable and electable? message portrayed in the media.

?Always beware the candidate in a nomination race who has two words attached to it: Inevitable and electable,? Will said. ?They?re deflating words. Just as these words are being used about Romney, a Rasmussen poll comes out from Ohio ? and no Republican president has ever won the presidency without carrying Ohio ? and he shows Romney losing to Obama by four points, Santorum tied with Obama.?

Later, Will took a jab at Romney?s impromptu insertion of the word ?severely? into his CPAC speech.

?It wasn?t in his speech,? Will said. ?He ab-libbed that word. It wasn?t in the text that they handed out. It?s just again, again a sign that he seems around conservatives like a well-meaning earnest tourist in a Latin country where he doesn?t speak the language and he?s trying hard to connect with them. And he says ?my father grew up poor.? Please.?

Ultrasound study provides first direct evidence of effect of malaria on fetal growth

Ultrasound study provides first direct evidence of effect of malaria on fetal growth

Friday, February 10, 2012

A study of almost 3,800 pregnancies has provided the most accurate and direct evidence to date that malaria infection reduces early foetal growth. Low birth weight is the most important risk factor for neonatal mortality in developing countries. The research, carried out on the border of Thailand and Myanmar (Burma), highlights the importance of preventing malaria in pregnancy.

According to the World Malaria Report 2011, malaria killed an estimated 655,000 people in 2010. It is caused by parasites such as Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax that are injected into the bloodstream by infected mosquitoes.

Malaria is one of the most common parasitic infections to affect pregnancy. Previous studies have suggested that infection with both P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria during pregnancy reduces birth weight whether or not maternal symptoms are present. However, these studies have been hampered by difficulties in estimating gestational age accurately and diagnosing malaria infection in early pregnancy

Now, in a study published in the open access journal PLoS One, researchers at the Shoklo Malaria Research Unit on the border of Thailand and Myanmar, part of the Wellcome Trust-Mahidol University-Oxford University Tropical Medicine Research Programme, have used ultrasound scans to provide the first direct evidence of the effect of malaria on foetal growth in pregnancies.

Antenatal ultrasound, which is essential for dating pregnancy accurately, is becoming more widely available in developing countries. The technology also allows doctors or locally trained workers to measure the diameter of the foetus's head. For infections that occur in early pregnancy, the researchers believe that the size of the head may be the most appropriate indicator of growth restriction.

The ultrasound scans revealed that the diameter of the average foetus's head was significantly smaller when malaria infection occurred in the first half of pregnancy when compared to pregnancies unaffected by malaria. On average, at the mid-pregnancy ultrasound scan the foetuses' heads were 2% smaller when affected by malaria. Even a single infection of treated P. falciparum or P. vivax malaria was associated with reduced foetal head diameter, irrespective of whether the woman had shown symptoms or not.

However, although a single early detected and well-treated malaria episode had an effect on foetal head size at mid-trimester, this was not seen at delivery, suggesting that early treatment with effective drugs may allow for growth to recover later in pregnancy.

"By using antenatal ultrasound screening, we have provided clear evidence that malaria infection affects the growth of a child in the womb, even when the infection is caught early and treated. This can increase the risk of miscarriage and affect the child's health in later life," explains Dr Marcus Rijken, first author on the study.

"Strategies to prevent malaria in pregnancy have focused on the second half of pregnancy, when most of the foetal weight gain takes place, but our works suggests that we need to broaden our efforts to focus on the first trimester, too. We need to make sure that pregnant woman are educated about the risks of malaria in pregnancy and where possible in areas of high risk, offer preventative medication from early pregnancy onwards."

Disney considering 28-day rental window, because 'On Stranger Tides' was that good

That sound you can hear is the studios dashing around as they look for a new scapegoat. Disney's got Redbox and Netflix in its sights as it declares plans to impose a 28-day window before it'll make its titles available for rental. Despite conceding that the studio hadn't seen any impact on overall DVD sales, CEO Bob Iger pointed to a 16 percent drop in quarterly revenue compared to 2010 as the motivation. It's also collecting splinters in its backside as it watches to see how well digital locker service UltraViolet fares with consumers before committing to join the program. Of course, given the legitimacy of First Sale Doctrine, it's possible Redbox will do as its done with Warner titles and just buy 'em at retail -- as long as it can cover its costs as it does so.

Human Resources Outsourcing ? Professional Boss Business (PEO ...

Running a company can be a full-time job plus you ought to spend the time guaranteeing the company runs smoothly. When managing payroll not to mention relevant Human Resources jobs begin to distract anyone from concentrating your own organization?s main company, it may well be time in order to outsource certain and / or your HR-related activities. In these cases it makes sense with turn up to a company which handles HR administration as their main company.
Subject to your preferences, a person may desire to consider either a Recruiting Outsourcing (HRO) provider or perhaps a Professional Company Company (PEO).
