New Android apps worth downloading: Audible for Android update, Tiny Thief, Sprinkle Islands

Get through more books this week with Audible, the app to kick off today's Apps Worth Downloading column. The service brings audiobooks straight to your Android device and makes listening to and enjoying them really easy. We've also got a pair of great puzzle games to tank your productivity this week: Tiny Thief, a stealth puzzler in which you need to steal things without getting caught, and Sprinkle Islands, a physics title in which you need to carefully direct water around various levels to put out fires.

Audible for AndroidWhat?s it about? Download and listen to audio books using your Android device with Audible.

What?s cool? Audible is a subscription-based service that's filled with thousands of audiobooks, and provides serious discounts to its members on audiobook costs. The Android app syncs up with your Audible account on the web, allowing you to browse through, download and transfer books between your devices so you can listen to them on the go. The app also provides news on books and authors, and packs badges you can unlock through your listening habits. The latest update to Audible introduces a newly redesigned user interface and new simplification in navigating through your library and skipping through books to the chapters you want to hear.

Who?s it for? If you're an Audible user or a fan of audiobooks, you'll want to check out this one.

What?s it like? Snag LibriVox, another audiobook app that's filled with free offerings. Readers should also grab Amazon's Kindle app, which works in much the same way as Audible, but with e-books.

Tiny ThiefWhat?s it about? Stealth puzzler Tiny Thief challenges players to steal stuff from corrupt merchants, mean Medieval guards and more throughout a number of challenging levels.

What?s cool? As the tiny thief of Tiny Thief, it's your job to steal stuff. Set in a side-scrolling, 2-D world with a fun animated art style, the game requires you to use the environment of each stage to your advantage. You might need to hide in a barrel from approaching guards, or climb a ladder and utilize a nearby fishing pole to liberate the item of your fancy in each stage. Hidden puzzles require you to explore what you can interact with in each level, either by sending the thief after it or by tapping it yourself. With lots of inventive levels, Tiny Thief is an easygoing puzzler that's both challenging and great for killing a few minutes.

Who?s it for? If you like stealth games and puzzles that require novel solutions, check out Tiny Thief.

What?s it like? There are more great puzzles to be had in Scribblenauts Remix, which also requires some out-of-the-box thinking, and World of Goo.

Sprinkle IslandsWhat?s it about? The sequel to physics puzzler Sprinkle once again asks you to don your firefighter hat and blast blazes with your hose, putting out fires in various scenarios by effectively using the movement of water.

What?s cool? The original Sprinkle's puzzles were all about the way water moves in any given level. With fires starting in houses, you often had to spray water over hills or use it to push obstacles in order to get the flames doused. Sprinkle Islands takes that same basic formula and expands it, bringing moving parts like huge centipedes and octopuses to serve as bosses, which must be dealt with in order to fight fires. The game spans four different islands, each a unique setting with different challenges to be overcome.

Who?s it for? Physics game fans and those who enjoyed Sprinkle shouldn't miss the smart puzzles in its sequel.

What?s it like? You should also check out Sprinkle (duh) and Puddle, which both require players to pay attention to the flow of liquids in order to succeed.

Pets? Trust hires big name lobbyist to bite back at Miami-Dade mayor

The Miami Herald

The animal lovers aren?t giving up.

After Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Wednesday nixed the same taxpayer-supported plan to stop killing unwanted animals at the county shelter that he?d supported on Tuesday, Pets? Trust Miami had hired Ron Book, the Rin Tin Tin of South Florida lobbyists.

He plans to address the County Commission at a budget meeting Tuesday, as Pets? Trust advocates rally outside Government Center.

Pets? Trust co-founder Rita Schwartz said Book will fight for the nearly half a million people who voted ?yes?? to a tax increase earmarked for animal care, and to make sure that its proceeds are spent properly.

She said Book will be paid from a political action committee that Pets? Trust Miami established before the November election.

In a barrage of emails and phone calls to county government office, some angry citizens accused Gimenez of betraying the animals; others of betraying the nearly 500,000 voters who in November approved a nominal property tax increase to improve animal services in a non-binding vote.

That would have raised an estimated $19 million in a year, costing the average property owner $20.

Some animal advocates went directly to the mayor?s Facebook page.

?What nerve to post a picture of the American flag when you just killed democracy... and thousands more homeless dogs and cats in Miami Dade shelters,?? wrote poster Jennifer Cohen.

On Tuesday, Gimenez said: ?We must respect the will of the voters.?

The next day he said he?d ?heard from several people?? who claimed they would not have favored the measure if it had been binding. He ditched the plan but vowed to ?find?? $4.5 million in the budget for animal care, which would limit any tax-rate increase to money for libraries and fire-rescue.

Not enough, said Book.

?Our position is that if we can?t get full implementation, let?s see if there?s a way to compromise, but a quarter of the money? That?s not OK.??

County spokesman Fernando Figueredo insisted Gimenez is ?committed to the spirit of the ballot question,?? but lacks support from the commission, which recently unanimously accepted a blueprint for spending the $19 million that Animal Services Director Alex Mu?oz compiled.

Figueredo said that with the promised $4.5 million, in addition to its $10 million budget, Animal Services can ?create programs to expand adoptions and help to get [cats and dogs] off the streets, and also increase spay/neuter, and create programs to save the most at-risk animals by supporting rescue groups.??

With that, he said, ?We can at least being the process of ?no kill.? This mayor has been the most supportive of ?no kill.? It?s not like he?s backing away, but this year it?s not the right time.??

Pets? Trust, which fought to put the question of a possible tax increase on the county ballot and establish a board to oversee grants to rescue groups from the $19 million, had as its cornerstone a massive free and low-cost sterilization campaign to stem pet overpopulation and by extension, Animal Services intakes.

Such surgeries would have been conducted out of existing warehouses or modular structures in poor neighborhoods where residents don?t have access to retail vets, and couldn?t afford them even if they existed. Spay-neuter operations can cost up to $600 in private vet offices.

Asiana flight attendants receive praise for role as first responders

In a profession often noted primarily for their appearance and customer service skills, the 12-person cabin crew aboard Asiana Flight 214 which crash-landed in San Fransisco July 6, has been recognized for their bravery and heroism.?

Kim Yoon-ju, a flight attendant who was working onboard Asiana Airlines Flight 214 when it crashed while landing in San Francisco cries after arriving at the Incheon Airport in Incheon, west of Seoul, July 11. The flight attendants aboard during the crash have been praised for their bravery and heroism.

Before?Asiana?Flight 214 crash-landed in San Francisco, the last time the Korean airlines' flight attendants made news it was over an effort by their union earlier this year to get the dress code updated so female attendants could wear trousers.

Now, with half of the 12-person cabin crew having suffered injuries in the accident and the remaining attendants receiving praise for displaying heroism during the emergency evacuation, the focus has shifted from their uniform looks to their heroic actions.

In the July 6 crash three members of the crew were ejected from the plane's sheared off tail section while still strapped in their seats. Those who were able, meanwhile, oversaw the emergency evacuation of nearly 300 passengers ? using knives to slash seatbelts, calling pilots who slung axes to free two colleagues trapped by malfunctioning slides, fighting flames, and bringing out frightened children.

"I wasn't really thinking, but my body started carrying out the steps needed for an evacuation," head attendant Lee Yoon-hye, 40, said during a news conference Sunday night before federal safety investigators instructed the airlines not to let the crew discuss the accident. "I was only thinking about rescuing the next passenger."

Such conduct has given a measure of pride to members of a profession who often are recognized only for their appearance and customer service skills.

"In the face of tremendous adversity and obstacles, they did their job and evacuated an entire wide-bodied aircraft in a very short period of time," said Veda Shook, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants and an Alaska Airlines flight attendant.

"It's such a shining reflection, not just of the crew, but of the importance of flight attendants in their roles as first responders," Shook said.

Along with training in first aid and firefighting, flight attendants every year are required to practice the moves needed to get passengers off a plane in 90 seconds or less, Shook said. They go through timed trials, practicing skills that include shouting over pandemonium and engine noise, communicating with people frozen in fear and opening jammed doors and windows, she said. The goal is to make performing these tasks automatic.

"We have the muscle memory," Shook said.

It's a significant departure from the days when flight attendants were always women and known as stewardesses or air hostesses. In that era decades ago, members of the cabin crew weren't expected to play much of a role in emergencies.

Laura Brentlinger, who spent 31 years as a United Airlines flight attendant, recalled having no idea how much danger everyone was in during one of her first emergency landings in 1972. She didn't realize the severity of the situation until it was over and she saw the pilot's face.

"In those days, it was like pat you on the head, just go back and keep the people nice and smile. That's how far we've come, thank the Lord," Brentlinger said. "We were just little Barbie dolls back there."

The role of flight attendants in the U.S. expanded significantly in 1989 after Air Ontario Flight 1363 crashed after taking off in Canada. An investigation revealed that a flight attendant had seen ice on a wing but did not speak up, assuming the pilots knew and would not welcome the information from her.

Since then, FAA rules have required that cabin crew members be incorporated into the communications system known as "crew resource management" that empowers all airline personnel to voice concerns to the cockpit even if it means challenging senior pilots.

The philosophy also authorizes flight attendants to order emergency evacuations. Hearing that the pilots of?Asiana?Flight 214 told the flight attendants to delay an evacuation for 90 seconds after the crash landing in San Francisco, giving the order only after a flight attendant spotted flames outside, made Brentlinger wonder whether?Asiana?Airline's attendants have the same authority.

"I'm sure they have a very different hierarchy and can't do anything without the pilot's permission," she said. "There is no doubt in my mind I would have evacuated that aircraft immediately."

Brentlinger said her heart aches when she thinks about what?Asiana's?flight attendants are going through now and are likely to go through in the months to come.

She was aboard a 747 that lost a cargo door at 22,000 feet, sucking nine passengers to their deaths over the Pacific Ocean in 1989.

After the disaster aboard United Flight 811, Brentlinger said she suffered severe post-traumatic stress disorder and was unable to get back on a plane for more than four years. Handling the emergency itself was "the easiest part of the whole process ... because you train for it and you just do it," she said.

She went on to say that "after the dust settles, so to speak" and one tries to get on with life, "it's horrific, at least it was for me."

The Flight 214 cabin crew consisted of 11 women and one man, ranging in age from 21 to 42, according to the airline. Spokeswoman Lee Hyomin said?Asiana?is not sharing information on emergency training hours of its flight attendants because the National Transportation Safety Board asked it not to share any information related to the accident while it's being investigated.

Jean Carmela Lim, 32, a Sydney-based travel consultant, spent a year working as an?Asiana?flight attendant eight years ago and posted pictures from her experience on her travel blog, Holy Smithereens, last week. She recalls her weekslong safety training as rigorous.

"We needed to be able to swim while dragging another human ? dead weight ? in one hand, and hoist ourselves and the dead weight onto the safety raft," Lim said.

The appearance standards were almost as demanding. Lim, who was 23 when she applied for the job, initially was told she too old. During the interview, she was required to wear a short skirt without stockings. Flight attendant school included sessions on hair, makeup and comportment. During flights, the cabin manager inspected the attendants to make sure they were wearing the right color of nail polish and had their aprons properly ironed.

Lim said that appearance is important, but seeing pictures of Flight 214's attendants outside the burned-out aircraft in skirts made her hope their union prevails on the pants issue.

"If there's evidence that wearing a skirt will enable you to save more lives than wearing pants, then by all means keep them in skirts," she said. "If I'm trapped in a burning aircraft , I doubt I'll notice if the cabin crew saving me had lipstick on her teeth or had a tuft of hair out of place."

Lee reported from Seoul, South Korea.

Interspecies transplant works in first step for new diabetes therapy

[unable to retrieve full-text content]In the first step toward animal-to-human transplants of insulin-producing cells for people with type 1 diabetes, scientists have successfully transplanted islets, the cells that produce insulin, from one species to another. And the islets survived without immunosuppressive drugs. Scientists developed a new method that prevented rejection of the islets, a huge problem in transplants between species, called xenotransplantation.

FAILED MISSILE TESTS GOP Blames Obama Budget Cuts, Neglect

Four high-ranking Republican lawmakers criticized the Obama administration on Friday for three failed tests of the country's missile-defense system, saying budget cuts and neglect are to blame.?

Sens. James Inhofe, R-Okla., and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., along with Reps. Howard ?Buck? McKeon, R-Calif., and Mike Rogers, R-Ala., sent Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel a letter faulting President Obama for allegedly gambling with national security by cutting funding to the program. They claim this hampered the ability to conduct vital tests needed to make sure the "ground-based midcourse defense system" (GMD) worked properly and conduct regular maintenance.?

The last successful GMD intercept test was in 2008. Since then, there have only been three attempted intercept tests and two flight tests -- the most recent of which was in January, and was successful. All of the intercept tests, however, tanked. The latest failed test was last Friday.?

?While it may take some time to reach a final diagnosis of the cause of the July 5th test failure, it is already clear that President Obama?s decision to drastically cut funding for the GMD program since he came to office and to ?curtail additional GMD development? has drained funding available to conduct needed tests of this system,? the letter from the lawmakers said.

In 2008, funding for GMD was close to $2 billion. By 2012, the GMD budget had been slashed in half with more cuts projected over the next five years.

?Such funding cuts have touched every facet of the GMD program, including its maintenance,? the letter said.

Following the latest test failure, the Defense Department released a short statement that provided few details on what happened.

?Although a primary objective was the intercept of a long-range ballistic missile target launched from the U.S. Army?s Reagan Test Site on Kwajalein Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands, an intercept was not achieved,? the statement said.

?Program officials will conduct an extensive review to determine the cause of causes of any anomalies which may have prevented a successful intercept.?

Initial findings from an internal investigation found that a faulty battery may be to blame, Reuters reported Friday, quoting an industry source.

"The initial look at the data indicates the problem was in the power suite, with the battery," the source told Reuters.?

If that theory is proven, it would point to a component-manufacturing issue or quality control problem, the source said.

The Republican lawmakers want the Obama administration to free up more money so the Missile Defense Agency can conduct more tests, which includes a new intercept test of the CE-1 Enhanced Kill Vehicle GBI.?

?Regardless of the causes of the recent flight test failures, we encourage you to make the development and deployment of a new kill vehicle one of your highest priorities, especially in light of your recent announcement to deploy an additional 14 ground-based interceptors in Alaska to address the growing threat from North Korea,? the lawmakers wrote.

They argue that the test should take place this year to allay concerns over the ?capability and credibility? of the country?s GMD system.

FoxNews.com reached out to the Department of Defense on Friday to find out what was the suspected cause of the test failure. The media spokesperson assigned to the case was not in the office and unavailable for comment because she had been furloughed.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Before Playstation there was the 'SEGA Sony'

An MCV article reflecting back on E3 and comparisons with E3 1995 reveals the partnership between SEGA and Sony that could have led to both companies making a console together and not being rivals. This is the first time I have seen or heard of this.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/tale-...s-sega/0118482

?Sony came to us after they had been rebuffed by Nintendo,? remembers Kalinske.

?They had wanted Nintendo to use some technology that they had, and Nintendo instead chose to work with Philips. That really annoyed Sony. Olaf Olafsson [Sony Electronic Publishing President] and Micky Schulhof [President of Sony America] came to my office and said: ?Tom, we really don?t like Nintendo. You don?t like Nintendo. We have this little studio down in Santa Monica [Imagesoft] working on video games, we don?t know what to do with it, we?d like Sega?s help in training our guys. And we think the optical disc will be the best format.?

?Well I agreed with them, I thought CDs would be the next format as well. But in those days nobody knew how to programme on optical discs. So I said, ?Ok. Let?s combine our efforts. Let?s finance Imagesoft, and let?s finance this little developer called Digital Pictures, which seemed to be furthest along in knowing how to programme on optical disc.? And they financed three titles from Digital Pictures and we did as well.''

?We had the Sony guys and our engineers in the United States come up with specs for what this next optical-based hardware system would be. And with these specs, Olafsson, Schulhof and I went to Japan, and we met with Sony?s Ken Kutaragi.

?He said it was a great idea, and as we all lose money on hardware, let's jointly market a single system ? the Sega Sony hardware system ? and whatever loss we make, we split that loss.?

?Next we went to Nakayama [Sega President] and the Board at Sega, and they basically turned me down. They said: ?That?s a stupid idea, Sony doesn?t know how to make hardware. They don?t know how to make software either. Why would we want to do this?? That is what caused the division between Sega and Sony and caused Sony to become our competitor and launch its own hardware platform.?

This was the first of many disagreements between Sega Japan and its US team in the build-up to E3. In fact, Sega America had little faith in the Saturn and was desperate to improve it.''

New Roads mayor to seek injunction against tax increase

NEW ROADS, LA (WAFB)- According to a news release, New Roads Mayor Robert Myer said he will seek an injunction to block the Pointe Coupee Police Jury's tax increase if jury members do not immediately rescind the tax.

Myer says the tax increase is unconstitutional. According to Myer, the Pointe Coupee Police Jury passed a resolution on April 23, 2013 to raise the general millage for residents and businesses of New Roads from 1.71 mills to 3.42 mills without a notice to the citizens.

The following text is the rest of the news release:

"Myer addressed jury members two weeks ago, informing them that their tax increase is unconstitutional, unfair and a deterrent to economic development. The Louisiana Constitution limits parish governments from levying general millage taxes on municipalities that exceed 1,000 in population and that provide and maintain a road paving system. The parish government can only impose half the parish-wide general millage rate of 3.42 mills inside the city limits of New Roads, thus capping its rate at 1.71 mills, Myer said.

"The City of New Roads clearly meets both factors," Myer said, noting that the city's population is 5,000 people, and the city provides and maintains a system of street paving as evidenced by its budgeted expenditures.

Myer explained to the jury that the city recently built and paved Memorial Boulevard, which will serve as a new economic corridor, and it will build and pave an extension of 10th Street. Also, the city will construct the King's subdivision to the Curet subdivision connector road in the coming months. He also said the city funds and operates a street maintenance program that includes repairing streets, maintaining curbs, ditches and drainage related to local streets.

"After my presentation of the facts, the jury failed to take action to rescind this unconstitutional tax," he said. "Jury members have chosen to ignore the State Constitution and the rights of the citizens of New Roads by not rescinding their vote to levy additional taxes on the people and businesses of New Roads," Myer said. "Therefore, I am moving forward on legal action to block this tax increase. I was hopeful that it would not have to come to this, but I am prepared to do all that is necessary to protect the people and businesses of New Roads from unfair taxes."

Myer also said the Police Jury's action was taken without advertising to the public and without the opportunity of a public vote. "What the Police Jury is trying to do is a modern-day ?taxation without representation' assault on the people and businesses of New Roads," Myer said. "The residents here had no say in this tax increase and the increase is also a violation of the Louisiana Constitution."

Myer said businesses and residents of New Roads are currently paying their fair share of taxes for road maintenance in the city and throughout the parish. In particular, the parish has collected $4.6 million since 2005 from inside the City of New Roads from its half-cent sales tax that is dedicated to road maintenance and construction throughout the parish. Since the tax went into effect 16 years ago, however, parish records show only $2.3 million has been spent on projects within the City of New Roads. In fact, it is estimated that residences and businesses within the City of New Roads have contributed nearly $10 million to this road tax -- four times the amount that was spent within the city.

Much of New Road's street and road maintenance costs have been funded by the city, which since Myer took office, has budgeted and spent nearly $2 million annually on constructing, paving and maintain local roads and streets.

"This is not a city versus a parish issue, because we all believe that monies collected within the City of New Roads should go to help our friends, families and businesses who live outside our city limits and throughout the parish. However, in addition to the unconstitutional property tax increase, the parish has also recently raised fees on garbage collection and drainage impact. These arbitrary tax and fee increases by the parish create an undue burden on businesses and residents of the City of New Roads. Our citizens deserve better treatment from their government, and this administration will stop at nothing to give them that."

China?s Lenovo unseats HP as world?s top PC maker amid prolonged slump for market

SAN FRANCISCO/SINGAPORE ? China?s Lenovo Group Ltd unseated Hewlett-Packard as the world?s top PC maker in the latest quarter ? a quarter which saw global shipments tumble 11% from a year earlier due to spectacular growth in tablets and smartphones.

Microsoft overhauls company structure to cope with PC market decline

Microsoft Corp., playing catch-up in mobile computing, is reorganizing into fewer units and shuffling senior management roles to speed development of hardware and Web-based services. Read more.

It was the fifth straight quarter of decline and analysts expect PC shipments to continue to fall, albeit at a slower pace as companies upgrade to Windows 8 and buy laptops that can be separated from keyboards to become tablets.

Lenovo now commands 16.7% of the world?s personal computer market, up from 15.3% in the previous quarter according to research firm IDC. It has spent heavily over the past few years to bolster its PC business with purchases such as Brazilian electronics maker CCE last year, Germany?s Medion in 2011 and IBM?s PC business in 2005.

As smaller vendors lost share, HP also rose, climbing to 16.4% from 15.7%. But the U.S. firm has ceded ground to Lenovo as it grappled with numerous changes in executive leadership in recent years, leading to strategic mistakes, analysts said.

Worldwide PC shipments totaled 75.6 million units in the second quarter, down 11.4% compared to the same quarter in 2012 but slightly better than expected, IDC said.

The waning fortunes of the $200 billion PC market, has prompted some PC vendors, such as Lenovo, to diversify into smartphones, tablets and other mobile gadgets, as well as into the enterprise sector, such as servers.

?Based on our (smartphone) success in China, we will slowly roll out in different markets. Tablets are part of our overall PC-plus portfolio,? Lenovo CFO Wong Wai Ming told Reuters in a phone interview.

Analysts at CLSA said in a report they expect the PC market to emerge from a trough in the second quarter, adding that volumes are likely to decline by 7% this year and 4.5% next year.

On Thursday, Lenovo?s Hong Kong-listed shares and Acer Inc?s ?s Taipei stock rose by about 5%, outperforming HP?s 1.9% rise and Dell Inc ?s 0.2% fall.

'Battleship'-style 'GlassBattle' shows gaming potential of Google Glass

Video games

Ever want to play a game of "Battleship" while still managing to take a trip to the grocery store? Soon Google Glass owners could be able to.

Ever want to play a game of "Battleship" while still managing to take a trip to the grocery store? Soon Google Glass owners could be able to.

Now that Google is diving head-first into the weird world of wearable computing, and is fueling a nascent app ecosystem around Google Glass, you soon may be able to play games like "Battleship" with your friends while you go about your daily activities.

A new demo from third-party Glass developer BrickSimple shows how a "Battleship"-style game, "GlassBattle," could work, running continuously in the periphery of a Glass user's vision. Players fire at their opponents' ships by calling out grid positions on a gameboard that hovers in the upper-right corner of their vision. The moves are then registered by opposing players' Glass in real time. If there's a hit, both parties find out immediately.

Just imagine walking through the grocery store and overhearing someone muttering, "You sank my battleship!" That may sound silly, but is it any more annoying than talking to people who glance down at their smartphone screens to make moves in "Words with Friends" or "Draw Something" every few minutes?

"GlassBattle" is more a proof of concept than anything else at this point. The game runs entirely off Glass's Mirror API, which till now has mostly been used to push text and images to Glass users with what Google calls "timeline cards."

When it comes to synchronous interactions between several Glass users, such as playing a game together, these "cards" can feel pretty static. Eventually, Google will need to provide a richer API for Glass developers if it wants to see full-blown games appear on the device ? something it already hinted at doing at the Google I/O conference this May. As BrickSimple explains in its demo video, the developers had to "push everything that Mirror does and make it do something cool."

Gamers are still a ways away from playing a true augmented-reality version of, say, "Battlefield" (though that hasn't stopped them from dreaming about it). But as Matt Miesnieks of the AR startup Dekko told NBC News in May, Google Glass is the first product that's proved truly "exciting" for developers like him.

Kings of Leon: Staging benefit for Okla. tornado victims

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- When tornadoes devastated parts of Oklahoma earlier this year, members of Kings of Leon decided to help out the people of the state that's been a huge part of their lives over the years.

They just weren't sure how, and opening up the bank account didn't seem the right way to go.

"It just felt like something we could lend a hand to," Jared Followill said. "We talked about just donating some money. But you know we just all started talking and we realized we'd probably raise more money by doing a show and it would probably be more fun for us than just writing a check."

The Kings of Leon's Rock for Oklahoma: A Benefit Concert for Oklahoma Tornado Victims will take place July 23. It's the third big fundraiser in the wake of the storms that killed dozens and uprooted thousands.

Known as a Nashville band, the Kings have strong and deep ties to Oklahoma. Half the Followill family band, which consists of brothers Jared, Nathan and Caleb and cousin Matthew, was born in the state. They cheer for Oklahoma sports teams and return every year for a family reunion in Talihina. And their fathers and many family members still live there.

Kilogram Tea - Cool Hunting

kilogram-tea-10.jpg

Beans from Chicago-based Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea are so adored that the latter often plays second fiddle and is overlooked despite the tea's excellent quality. In an effort to showcase and increase awareness of their diverse tea offerings, this past April, Intelligentsia Coffee (with a new shortened name) launched a separate brand called Kilogram Tea, which now hosts all their tea-related products. Longtime Intelligentsia tea-buyer Doug Palas continues to hold the same dedication to sustainability, taste and freshness for Kilogram; the biggest change is the message and context?tea isn't a lesser alternative to coffee, but has a story that's just as compelling.

kilogram-tea-12.jpg

The new bright, contemporary packaging has a practical purpose, with each of the five colors corresponding to a different tea variety (black, green, white, oolong or herbal). The majority of Kilogram's tea is organically certified, and available in both loose-leaf and teabags to suit drinkers's preferences. The pyramid shaped tea bags are larger than standard ones, allowing plenty of room for the leaves to unfurl and steep to their full potential. The range of teas that Kilogram offers is impressive; from traditional Organic Earl Grey to Organic Golden Needles, black tea sourced from Yunnan, China.

kilogram-tea-11.jpg

While freshly boiled tea may not be a go-to during these hot summer months, Kilogram offers iced tea options such as their Organic Lemongrass Melange, which we found to be refreshing without being sweet. If you're seeking natural tartness, try the King Crimson tisane?the caffeine-free herbal blend of hibiscus, citrus and lemongrass resembles potpourri, is incredibly fragrant and transforms the water into a bewitching shade of ruby red. The Chai Tea concentrate is another great warm weather option.

A two ounce box of tea at Kilogram starts at $8. See the full Kilogram tea range at Intelligentsia Coffee.

New car too pricey? Used car prices are dropping - AZCentral.com

DETROIT ? Is that new set of wheels out of your price range? Used cars have gotten more affordable, especially if you?re looking for a small car or a hybrid.

Used car prices have been falling since 2011, and they?re expected to decline gradually for the remainder of this year. That?s good news for those joining or re-entering the workforce, or anyone else who might find a payment on a new car too steep.

There is some volatility. Prices for used cars are typically higher at the start of the year, when dealers buy cars at auctions in advance of the spring selling season. They decline as the year goes on. The price of a 3-year-old car fell 4 percent between April and June, estimates Alex Gutierrez of car-pricing company Kelley Blue Book.

Used-car dealers get many of their cars from auctions run by companies like Manheim, a division of Cox Enterprises of Atlanta. The average price for a used car at auction was $11,031 in June, down 6 percent from its peak in May 2011, Manheim reported this week. The 2011 peak was the highest price Manheim had seen since 1995, when it began collecting data.

At Manheim-run auctions, banks and auto company financing operations sell cars that have come back after leases expire. Rental car companies and car dealers also sell cars there. Dealers buy the cars, mark them up and sell them for a profit.

Auction values also help set prices for individuals who want to sell their cars at the market rate.

In 2009, new vehicle sales fell to a 30-year low of 10.4 million. Two years later, used cars were in short supply and prices got so high that it made sense for consumers to buy new.

Things have turned around. New car sales picked up starting in 2010 and now there are far more used cars in the pipeline. Buyers shopping for a 3-year-old used car can expect to pay 25 or 30 percent less than the manufacturer?s suggested retail price for a current new model.

The average retail price of a used car fell by $1,000 per car in the last half of 2012. Gutierrez expects a similar decline in the second half of this year. Keep in mind that used car prices vary widely based on the age of the car and the miles it has been driven.

The price declines will be gradual. While more inventory is helping to lower prices, demand is rising as more people get jobs and need vehicles for work.

Gutierrez estimates that a 3-year-old car cost an average $19,000 in June. By comparison, a new car averaged $31,663 last month. That?s up $307 ? or around 1 percent ? from April.

Used cars are big business. Every year around 40 million are sold in the U.S., compared with 14 or 15 million new cars.

If you?re looking for a used car, check prices online and then decide whether you want to go through a dealer or through an individual. Private sellers will often give you a better deal, but dealerships offer certified pre-owned cars that have gone through inspections and may offer better warranties.

Here?s what you can expect to pay right now for 2010 model-year vehicles, according to Kelley Blue Book:

SMALL CARS: Prices on the smallest and most fuel-efficient used vehicles fell rapidly between April and June as gas prices moderated and carmakers enticed buyers with deals on new models. The price of a 2010 Toyota Prius fell 15 percent over the last three months, from $18,600 to $15,800. Prices of small cars like the Honda Civic and Ford Focus are down 8.5 percent. The average price of a 3-year-old small car was $13,000 in June.

MIDSIZE CARS: The value of midsize cars like the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata have been hurt by the arrival of several new or redesigned models that hit the market in the last year, including the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima. Prices for used midsize cars are down 6.9 percent to $14,503.

LUXURY CARS: Luxury cars held steady, with used-car prices falling just 1 percent to $28,692. But Gutierrez expects a steeper drop in July, when luxury vehicle values tend to fall as owners anticipate new models coming in the fall.

SMALL AND MIDSIZE SUVS: Prices of hot-selling midsize SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer are down just 4 percent, to an average of $20,581. Small SUVs like the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V are down 7 percent to an average of $17,548.

TRUCKS: Pickup trucks are in demand, as small businesses replace older trucks. Prices for used full-size pickups like the Chevrolet Silverado stayed flat between April and June, at $21,854. Prices of small pickups like the Toyota Tacoma are down 1 percent to $17,119.

8 Simple Summer Health and Fitness Tips | myWebbSite.ca

8 simple things you can do starting today, to help improve your health, fitness and diet:Back on January 1st you probably made a New Years resolution around health, diet and exercise. Now that summer is here and everyone is headed to the beach, are you feeling awkward about taking off your top layers and getting down to your swimwear? Instead of fussing about your body, do something about it. Take control now.

8 simple things you can do starting today, to help improve your health, fitness and diet:

  1. Cut the excuses! It?s easy to find an excuse not to do something. That?s why people don?t achieve their goals. Everyone wants to lose weight, but you need to commit to the time and effort to for real results to happen.
  2. Get fitness knowledge. If you don?t know your way around the gym, ask a friend to go with you until your comfortable with the equipment and can get a good routine going, or join a bootcamp or crossfit class with a certified instructor. If you?ve been doing the same routine over-and-over, get a personal trainer to help you get to your next fitness level.
  3. Understand nutrition. The key to losing weight is to pay attention to what you eat. There are lots of simple things you can do to cut calories in your diet. Read health blogs, consult a nutritionist, and real food packaging labels. Fueling your body isn?t just about what you eat, but when you are eating it.
  4. Record your activity. Once you have set your measurable goals for fitness and nutrition, keep track of your progress. Keep a food journal and record every single thing you eat and drink; there are great apps to help you do this. Weigh and measure yourself every week. Don?t be scared when you start gaining weight; muscle weights more than fat, so as you slim down, you will be gaining weight.
  5. Watch your diet. Keep your fridge and cupboards filled with healthy eating choices like fresh fruit and vegetables that are ready to go for snacking. Throw away crackers, chips and candy; if they aren?t in the house, you can?t eat them. If you must eat out, choose salads and always ask for your meal to be prepared and served without sauces, fats and oils; that?s where the hidden calories are when eating out.
  6. Snack all day. From the moment you wake up you need to begin fueling your body. Skipping meals doesn?t save calories; your body burns calories throughout the day, and skipping a meal will likely result in you eating extra at a later meal. Your diet should be balanced from across all the food groups throughout the day.
  7. Team up. Having a buddy who is into healthy live and fitness can help give you helpful tips and advice, but will also hold you accountable. Fitness buddies who have similar goals will help push you to your limits provide positive energy.
  8. Variety. Diet and exercise shouldn?t be boring or routing. Switch up cardio with running, swimming, biking and hiking. It?s good to change out an upper body day at the gym for a day of paddling a kayak or trying a marshal arts class. Instead of core day, take a yoga class. Do the same thing with your nutrition by trying new fruits and vegetables, or new recipes.

Most importantly, if you have fallen off the wagon, you know what you need to do to get back on it. It?s OK to take a short break, but get back to your healthy living routine quickly and re-evaluate your goals regularly. And yes, it?s OK to have a?cheat day, as long as you are working incredibly hard towards your goals.

Manufacturing slips in May, tempers signs of recovery

By William Schomberg and David Milliken

LONDON (Reuters) - British manufacturing contracted in May at its fastest pace since January, tempering signs that the economy is picking up speed.

Overall industrial output was also weaker than expected as it came in unchanged from April, and the country's trade deficit worsened in May to hit its highest level in six months.

"It's just a reminder that while the UK economic figures are looking better, the economy isn't out of the woods yet," said Philip Shaw, an economist at Investec in London, referring to the production figures.

Sterling fell to a near four-month low against the euro and gilts rallied after the data, which represented a break from a string of economic indicators that have beaten forecasts in recent weeks.

The Bank of England announced no new bond-buying stimulus last week after the first policy meeting chaired by new governor Mark Carney, but the central bank surprised markets by warning against premature expectations of an interest rate increase.

Manufacturing shrank by 0.8 percent, much weaker than forecasts for a 0.3 percent rise in a Reuters poll and was down 2.9 percent compared with May 2012, when there was one less public holiday than in May 2013.

Output in the industrial sector - which makes up about 15 percent of Britain's economy - was flat compared with April, falling short of forecasts for a 0.2 percent rise, the Office for National Statistics said.

The overall industrial output figure was supported by a 4.9 percent rise in oil and gas output, the biggest jump in six months after some maintenance projects were completed.

Some economists said they were surprised by the weak manufacturing data, which came a week after a survey of purchasing managers found the sector had its best growth in more than two years in June. That is a month later than the period covered by Tuesday's release.

"Today's figures feel a little out of kilter with other industry data and what our manufacturing clients are telling us," said Mike Rigby, who manages Barclays' banking relationships with manufacturers.

"Our clients suggest they have increased visibility of their forward order book which is having a positive effect on their appetite to invest. To many it feels like we are experiencing a more positive outlook," he added.

Three surveys published earlier on Tuesday showed rising house prices, improved business confidence and steady growth in retail sales.

The ONS said that on an annual basis, industrial output was down 2.3 percent, compared to forecasts for a 1.5 percent drop.

In the three months to May, output in the industrial sector was up 0.3 percent.

The ONS also said Britain's goods trade deficit grew to 8.491 billion pounds ($12.68 billion) from 8.430 billion pounds in April. Economists had forecast a gap of 8.47 billion pounds.

Including Britain's surplus in trade in services, the overall trade deficit widened to 2.435 billion pounds.

The monthly figures tend to be volatile, but over the three months to May, total exports were up 1.9 percent and imports grew 2.3 percent. ($1 = 0.6695 British pounds)

Forbes/Bluebox: 99 Percent Of All Android Installations Are Vulnerable To Hacking

From the article:

"This is the claim from Bluebox Security: that pretty much any Android device can be hacked and thus either be read or, even, be turned into part of a botnet:

The Bluebox Security research team ? Bluebox Labs ? recently discovered a vulnerability in Android?s security model that allows a hacker to modify APK code without breaking an application?s cryptographic signature, to turn any legitimate application into a malicious Trojan, completely unnoticed by the app store, the phone, or the end user. The implications are huge! This vulnerability, around at least since the release of Android 1.6 (codename: ?Donut? ), could affect any Android phone released in the last 4 years1 ? or nearly 900 million devices2? and depending on the type of application, a hacker can exploit the vulnerability for anything from data theft to creation of a mobile botnet."

I?m going to London tomorrow afternoon

I?ll bring my laptop but my aunt has no wifi so I?ll be on sporadically at best (probably never) for about ten days.

I?d say ?I?ve set up a queue so you won?t miss me too much" but that would be a lie because as we know I hate having to queue posts and have therefore not set one up.

Then I?m going to be in Canterbury for a few days so I?ll have wifi but probably not be on much either

Then I?ll be home and usual blogging will recommence.

So yeah just a heads up :)

'I have trouble': Tower logs capture moments after deadly crash

Listen to control tower audio at San Francisco International Airport just as Asiana Airlines Flight #214 crashed Saturday.

By Jay Blackman and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

?Hello, hello,? the pilot?s voice crackles over the radio moments after Asiana Airlines Flight 214 went down at San Francisco International on Saturday.

?I have trouble.?

The sequence of radio transmissions from the airport?s tower ? which sound strangely calm given the chaos unfolding onboard the shattered plane ? capture the immediate response of air traffic controllers and pilots after the flight went down, ripping off the plane?s tail section and mangling the fuselage.

Sources who spoke with NBC News on Saturday said that no distress call was made from the plane before landing.

?214 heavy, emergency vehicles are responding. Emergency vehicles are responding,? comes the response.

?Okay, I cannot...? the pilot starts to say, before his voice becomes incomprehensible.

Immediately, a message went out to other planes requesting that they keep clear of the San Francisco airport?s airspace, as responders sped toward the plane that witnesses said careened across the runway before coming to a stop and catching on fire.

On Sunday, Asiana Airlines announced that the two people killed in the crash were Chinese teenagers Ye Mengtuan and Wang Linjia. More than 180 people were injured in the crash. But in the immediate aftermath, no one knew how many of the 291 passengers and 16 crew members on board the crash had survived.

?Remain clear of the San Francisco air space, contact San Carlos tower,? the tower recordings from liveatc.net show.

?All runways are closed, airport is closed.?

Video recorded from inside a terminal at San Francisco International Airport captures the scene immediately after Flight 214 crashed Saturday.

About a minute after the pilot of the downed plane radioed the tower, another message went out to whoever might be listening in the crippled cockpit to let them know help was coming.

?Asiana 214 heavy, emergency vehicles are responding, we have everyone on their way.?

For the next several minutes, rescue units radio in their positions as they approach the Asiana flight.

?Everybody calm on ground. It?s going to be a while. Just hold your position and do not acknowledge,? comes another transmission ?after nearly a minute of silence.

Then, another fifty seconds later, a new voice comes across the air, reporting a sign of hope out on the runway strewn with debris.

?Yes, this is United 885. We see people and I think we should ? they need immediate attention. They?re alive and they?re walking around.?

?You said, you said people are just walking outside the airplane right now?? came the controller?s response.

?Yes, some people look like they?re struggling,? the pilot said.

Seconds later, it was clear to people on the ground that passengers had indeed climbed out of the crash that eyewitnesses said they initially thought could not possible have any survivors.

?Between the runways there are people right adjacent to the numbers. I can ? we can see about two or three people that are moving and, uh, and apparently survived.?

?Roger,? the controller responds.
