Huge floods in Manila as typhoon hits Philippines (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Massive flooding hit the Philippine capital on Tuesday as typhoon winds and rains isolated the historic old city where residents waded in waist-deep waters, dodging tree branches and debris. At least seven people were killed.

Authorities ordered more than 100,000 people across the country to shelter from Typhoon Nesat's rains and wind gusts of up to 106 miles (170 kilometers) per hour. Schools and offices were shuttered, and thousands were stranded by grounded flights and ferries kept in ports.

The typhoon made landfall before dawn over eastern mountainous provinces of Isabela and Aurora, which face the Pacific Ocean, then headed inland through farmlands north of Manila, the government weather bureau said. It was packing sustained winds of 87 mph (140 kph).

The first reported death was a 1 year old who drowned in the central island province of Cataduanes after falling into a river, the government disaster agency reported. As the typhoon moved into Manila, a mother and child were killed after their house was hit by a falling tree in the suburb of Caloocan, and four were reported killed by a collapsing wall in the suburb of Valenzuela.

Four fishermen were missing while more than 50 others were rescued along eastern shores after their boats overturned in choppy seas. Forecasters warned of 12-foot-high (4-meter-high) waves.

Along downtown Manila's baywalk, cars and buses were stuck and residents waded through floodwaters as waves as high as palm trees washed over the seawall, turning a six-lane highway into a huge brown river.

Sidewalks and entrances to buildings were swamped and vehicles struggled to navigate the narrow streets.

Manila Hospital moved patients from its ground floor, where waters were neck-deep, spokeswoman Evangeline Morales said. Hospital generators were flooded and the building had no power since early Tuesday.

Visibility in the city was poor, with pounding rains obscuring the view. Emergency workers were evacuating river areas in the city that are notorious for flooding.

An Associated Press photographer said soldiers and police in trucks were moving thousands of residents, mostly women and children, from the Baseco shanty facing Manila port after many houses were washed away. Male family members were reluctant to leave saying they wanted to guard their property.

Residents in one neighborhood of Quezon City, a Manila suburb, were fleeing their homes due to rising water from the nearby San Mateo River, radio reported.

In the financial district of Makati, a billboard fell on two cars and a bus, causing injuries.

With its immense 400-mile (650-kilometer) cloud band, the typhoon threatened to foul weather across the entire main island of Luzon as it moves across the Philippines toward the South China Sea late Wednesday or early Thursday toward southern China.

Heavy downpours and winds prompted the closure of government offices, schools and universities in the capital, while scores of domestic flights were canceled and inter-island ferries grounded, stranding thousands. The Philippine Stock Exchange and U.S. Embassy were also closed Tuesday. Waters at the gates of the embassy compound, which is located along Manila Bay, reached chest-deep.

A tornado in Isabela's Maconancon town ripped off the roofs of at least five houses, injuring two people, police said.

Power was cut in many parts of Luzon, including in Manila, where hospitals, hotels and emergency services used generators. Tree branches and torn tarpaulins littered the flooded streets. Traffic was light as most people stayed indoors.

About 112,000 people were ordered to leave their homes in five towns prone to flash floods and landslides in central Albay province. By Monday, more than 50,000 had moved to government-run evacuation centers and relatives' homes, officials said.

"We can't manage typhoons, but we can manage their effects," Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said.

Authorities were monitoring farming communities at the base of Mayon volcano in Albay, about 212 miles (340 kilometers) southeast of Manila.

Tons of ash have been deposited on Mayon's slopes by past eruptions, and mudslides caused by a typhoon in 2006 buried entire villages, leaving about 1,600 people dead and missing.

The typhoon bore down on the Philippines exactly two years after nearly 500 people died in the worst flooding in decades in Manila, a city of 12 million, when a tropical storm hit.

Residents commemorated the anniversary by offering prayers and planting trees Monday.

Nesat is the 16th cyclone to lash the Philippines this year. The geography of the archipelago makes it a welcome mat for about 20 storms and typhoons forming in the Pacific each year.

Obama making final push to blunt Palestinian bid (AP)

NEW YORK ? Scrambling to head off a diplomatic clash, President Barack Obama will publicly push for the Palestinians to drop a statehood bid when he addresses the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday.

Obama will follow up his speech with separate meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders as he seeks to coax both parties back to direct peace talks.

At the same time, U.S. officials are conceding that they probably cannot prevent Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas from moving forward with a request to the U.N. Security Council for full Palestinian membership.

Recognizing that Abbas seems intent to proceed, Obama is expected to privately ask the Palestinian leader to essentially drop the move for statehood recognition after Abbas delivers a formal letter of intent to the U.N. on Friday.

"The president will say, frankly, the same thing in private that he'll say in public, which is that we do not believe that this is the best course of action for achieving Palestinian aspirations," White House deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said.

Obama will also meet Wednesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Obama administration has pledged to veto any Palestinian statehood bid, arguing that only direct peace negotiations, not a U.N. vote, would allow the Palestinians to achieve the benefits of statehood.

With peace talks stalled, the U.S. and international partners have been negotiating intensely this week over the steps it would take to bring the two sides back to the negotiating table.

The new approach being considered would see the "quartet" of Mideast peace mediators ? the U.S., European Union, United Nations and Russia ? issue a statement addressing both Palestinian and Israeli concerns and setting a timetable for a return to the long-stalled peace talks, officials close to the diplomatic talks said.

Israel would have to accept its pre-1967 borders with land exchanges as the basis for a two-state solution, and the Palestinians would have to recognize Israel's Jewish character if they were to reach a deal quickly, officials close to the talks said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing diplomacy.

The White House publicly appeared to hold out slight hope that enough progress could be made to stop Abbas from formally requesting statehood recognition.

"President Abbas has indicated his determination to go to the Security Council, so we take him at his word on that," Rhodes said.

The simmering situation is far from the scenario Obama envisioned when he spoke at the U.N. one year ago.

"We should reach for what's best within ourselves," Obama said last September in pushing for negotiated agreement on a sovereign Palestinian state. "If we do, when we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member of the United Nations."

While the Palestinian statehood bid has overshadowed Obama's time at the U.N., he is also expected to use his speech to the international body to reflect on the sweeping changes in the world over the past year, most notably in the Arab world.

Rhodes said the president also would highlight significant foreign policy developments for the U.S., such as drawing down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Obama on Wednesday also planned to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. He was to meet with leaders from Britain, France, Japan and South Sudan, the world's newest nation.

MRI Can Spot Breast Cancer in High-Risk Women: Study (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Sept. 20 (HealthDay News) -- New research finds that compared to mammograms, MRI screenings for breast cancer saved money used for diagnosis and boosted the likelihood that high-risk, underserved women who were specially targeted would return for follow-up appointments.

But there's a big catch. Researchers were able to reduce the cost of an MRI scan to $649 on average -- compared to the usual $3,500 -- thanks to a grant. As a result, the cost per diagnosis was cheaper -- $21,561 for cancers found using MRI and $37,375 for those found using mammography.

"What we need is to lower the cost of MRI, and maybe that will happen as we do more of them," lead researcher Dr. Anne C. Ford, assistant professor in obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center, said in a news release from the American Association for Cancer Research.

In the study, the researchers compared two groups of women, all of whom were uninsured or underinsured. One group included 299 women with general risk factors who received mammography, and the other included 299 high-risk, underserved women who underwent MRI screening.

The mammography screenings detected one case of breast cancer, while the MRI screenings detected nine.

"In an underserved population, using this model, it is cost effective to screen with MRI because we found more breast cancers with MRI than we did with mammography in this population," Ford explained in the news release. "If you truly target high-risk women with MRIs, you can find the cancers, and you can find them early."

Three-quarters of women who received mammography followed up with screenings compared to 90 percent of those who underwent MRI screenings, the investigators found.

Results of the study were scheduled to be released Tuesday at the American Association for Cancer Research Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Washington D.C. Because the study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Kathleen Schmatz, the president of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association shared that if the economy continues to stay on a bad path, independent repair shops may benefit. She said that unless things turn real terrible, then it will be bad for us all. In a statement, Schmatz said, ?As long as it is just medium bad, it generally bodes pretty well for the repair shop.?

Overall, Americans are keeping their used vehicles for as long as possible rather than buying new ones, as it seems to make more sense to them with the tough economy. With purse strings tightening, it is more cost effective to repair used cars than to buy new, and this is where automotive repair shops are reaping the grand benefits.

Carving a 3.5 metre high cedar totem pole on ... - Family Woodworking

Early in September, my brother John and our friend Chris, and I spent 8 days at the island and we moved the log up to the shed where I will carve it next year. The two of them helped me move the very heavy log up to a site just outside The Shed. I would guess that the log weighs about 100 kilos (220 pounds):

With the ropes, one guy on the smaller end and two on the large end, the log proved quite easy to move.

I made two of these supports, intended to be inserted onto a Workmate, that will hold the log ion place for carving:

I thought that I had two old Workmates at camp, but I only found one, so temporarily, we placed the supports on one Workmate and one Walko:

With this arrangement, the log is too high. I need to collapse one set of legs on the Workmate and get something else to replace the Walko. I purchased a cheap ($29) Workmate rip-off in Hearst that will do the job. It doesn?t hacve a two tier leg arrangement, so I needed to cut off the legs (using a special carbide blade on my reciprocating saw):

I do need to decide what to carve into the pole. My instructor told me that the Haida people claim that Mother Nature as well as the log itself will make it clear what one should carve and that he had found this to be true. I had evidence that this is true upon my first arrival at Pellow?s Island this summer. As we approached the island, we noticed an eagle sitting on a rock along the shore to the east of the cabin. He remained in position for a long time and we got to within about 10 metres of his position. Unfortunately, my camera was not readily available. I take this as a sign that an eagle should be at the top of the new pole. Of course, all the animals on the pole will be native to the region. Right now, I am thinking that I will carve another beaver, another loon, a bear holding a fish, and a wolf. We will see if this is what actually happens once I start to carve.

Geithner presses EU to act; meets resistance (Reuters)

WROCLAW, Poland (Reuters) ? Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner drew a cool response from EU policymakers when he urged them to leverage their bailout fund to better tackle the debt crisis and to start speaking with one voice.

In a 30-minute meeting with euro zone finance ministers on Friday, Geithner pressed for the 440 billion euros European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) to be scaled up to give greater capacity to combat the bloc's debt malaise, a senior euro zone official said.

The U.S. Treasury said of Geithner's role that he "did not advocate or oppose any specific policy prescriptions."

One analyst familiar with the proposal said it would involve the EFSF guaranteeing a portion -- perhaps 20 percent -- of potential losses on euro zone debt, so that its capital would effectively stretch five times further.

Geithner's presence at the meeting underscored the depth of U.S. alarm but ministers were resistant to Washington telling the 17-country euro zone and its finance chiefs what to do.

"He conveyed dramatically that we need to commit money to avoid bringing the system into difficulty," Austria's Finance Minister Maria Fekter told reporters after the meeting.

"I found it peculiar that even though the Americans have significantly worse fundamental data than the euro zone, that they tell us what we should do and when we make a suggestion ... that they say no straight away."

Fekter said there had been particular disagreement over suggestions that Europe should find more money to fight the crisis. When German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble explained that would not go down well with taxpayers and that the only way to fund it would be a financial transaction tax, Geithner flatly ruled that out.

However, one senior official said Geithner's proposal on leveraging the EFSF had neither been rejected nor endorsed.

"It is being discussed," the official said, emphasizing that the priority was for euro zone national parliaments to ratify new powers for the EFSF agreed in July so it can lend to countries under attack in the markets and buy sovereign bonds to prop up struggling states.

Geithner was the head of the New York Federal Reserve at the height of the 2008-09 financial crisis where he helped develop an emergency loan facility that was used to help restart the frozen asset-backed securities market.

While no one described the gathering as ill-tempered or heated, it appeared clear from the reaction afterwards that Geithner and the Europeans did not see entirely eye-to-eye.

Jean-Claude Juncker, the chairman of the Eurogroup, said he was not prepared to discuss issues privy to the euro zone with someone from outside the currency bloc.

"We are not discussing the expansion or increase of the EFSF with a non-member of the euro area," he told reporters.

He also ruled out any further fiscal stimulus, something Washington has also called for. "Fiscal consolidation remains a top priority for the euro area," he said.

In a separate development that could have implications for Greek debt sustainability, financial sources told Reuters less than 75 percent of private creditors had agreed to take part in a bond swap scheme aimed at keeping Athens afloat, well below the 90 percent target. The measure is a vital part of a second Greek bailout agreed in July.

Belgian Finance Minister Didier Reynders said one option could be for the EFSF to make up the difference while Greek bankers say a shortfall could be covered from funds set aside to support banks in need.

"END LOOSE TALK"

With most economists saying a Greek default is inevitable at some point and the much larger Italian economy -- which would be too big for the euro zone to bail out -- not out of the firing line despite approval of a new austerity package this week, the pressure is on to act.

A Reuters poll of more than 50 economists across Europe gave a 65 percent chance Greece would default with half of them saying it would do so in within 12 months. Few expected it to be forced out of the currency bloc.

Speaking to a group of policymakers and bankers after the meeting, Geithner said the EU needed to end "loose talk" about a break-up of the euro and work more closely with the European Central Bank on solutions.

"What is very damaging (in Europe) from the outside is not the divisiveness about the broader debate, about strategy, but about the ongoing conflict between governments and the central bank, and you need both to work together to do what is essential to the resolution of any crisis," he said.

"Governments and central banks have to take out the catastrophic risks from markets ... (and avoid) loose talk about dismantling the institutions of the euro."

The ECB reluctantly agreed last month to buy the bonds of Italy and Spain after they came under market attack, on the understanding the EFSF would take up the cudgels once changes to the fund agreed in July are in place. That was too much for some in the ECB -- the top German official at the bank, Juergen Stark, announced his resignation last week.

"We are observing tensions in sovereign risk in the EU area, which we consider part of global tensions. It calls for us being alert ... putting our house in order," ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet told reporters.

In a news conference after finance ministers met alone to discuss the specifics of the crisis, Juncker and the European commissioner for monetary affairs, Olli Rehn, focused on the need for Greece to stick rigidly to commitments it has made.

Inspectors from the ECB, EU and IMF should report back on progress in early October, Rehn said, meaning that the next disbursement of aid to Greece from its first bailout -- vital to avert imminent default -- could be paid by mid-October.

A Greek government official said the heads of an EU/IMF inspection team would not arrive in Athens as planned on Monday to resume a performance review due to technical reasons and will instead hold a teleconference with the finance minister.

"The intention is to meet the fiscal targets for this year and next year without delay, without exception and deviations," Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos told reporters.

With no dramatic new policy unveiled, the euro gave up some of the gains seen in the previous session when the ECB and other top central banks joined forces to offer more dollar liquidity to banks struggling to secure funds.

"All the headlines that are coming out of the Ecofin meeting are pretty negative and the euro's resilience after the coordinated action from central banks on Thursday seems to be coming off," said Jeremy Stretch head of currency strategy at CIBC World Markets.

Among the issues finance ministers must try to resolve is a row over the terms of a second bailout for Greece, with countries such as Finland demanding collateral in return for new loans -- a major obstacle to a deal.

An adviser to Finnish Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen said it would probably not be until early October that the dispute was fully resolved.

Collateral is a must for Helsinki but officials say a solution is coming together whereby it is made so expensive to demand it that no country but Finland will take it.

What You Can Do Right Now to Safeguard Your Relationship Against a Bloody, Messy Death [Love]

It's surprising just how fast time goes by. One day you're crazy, madly, can't-get-the-other-person-you-just-met-out-of-your-head in love and the next you've been with with your significant other for so long it's hard to remember life before him or her. Some relationships blossom and deepen with age, others fizzle. Here's a look at some of the most common reasons relationships fail, and ways you can work through them together to continue joyfully on your adventure called couplehood.

Over the many lulls and peaks that define long-term relationships, couples face a lot challenges. Relationship problems don't necessarily mean you're not meant to be; sometimes they simply happen because you've been in the relationship so long, your significant other ends up playing second fiddle to the rest of your life.

Disclaimer: I'm not a relationship counselor or other such professional, just someone with a very keen interest in maintaining a healthy long-term relationship, having married my high school sweetheart and in the midst of planning our ten-year wedding anniversary for next month.

Problem #1: The relationship gets stale

Of course relationships are more exciting, breath-robbing, and heart-pounding at the beginning. Most of us accept that long-term relationships have a different kind of passion?hopefully an even a better, deeper one based not on unfamiliarity or that new relationship phenomenon but intimacy.

But it's also not unusual after a lot of time together to get locked into a kind of rut or stale pattern with your partner.

The Symptoms

There's nothing really wrong, maybe, but no sparks are flying either. Maybe you've been tied up into a sort of routine with work, kids, chores, and other responsibilities. Maybe you no longer share old common interests. Maybe you've just gotten used to each other to the point of starting to take each other for granted. Sometimes you don't even realize this is happening. This secret boredom is pretty dangerous, as studies reported by CNN show.

Solutions

Shake it up. Just as breaking out of your comfort zone may be key to achieving your dreams, to revive a stale relationship, you need to shake it up. Try new hobbies or explore new interests together; make new memories that excite you. It doesn't matter if these experiences are practical (cooking classes), silly (karaoke), or you don't stick with them (P90x), just trying them together is a bonding experience.

Be mindful of the little things. Also, practice gratitude every day if you can; I say this as personal strength-building exercise in general. Thinking back over almost two decades of going through major events?deaths, births, major illnesses and surgeries, financial crises, you name it?getting through those things made us stronger, no doubt. But making the effort to notice (and do) the little things over the long term is where real relationship gold hides. I think not only of my husband refilling my coffee cup for me in the mornings or commenting on posts I write (he really reads them?), but my fond memories of my parents' relationship are also filled with similarly small, seemingly inconsequential and everyday acts of love.

What You Can Do Right Now

• Open Google Calendar right now or your preferred reminder app and set up some recurring reminders (let's say weekly) to send your significant other a compliment or kind word. If there are days when you know encouragement will be especially needed?a big presentation or test?mark those too.
• If you've got one of those SMS apps that let you schedule your text messages in advance, set up some love-y texts now instead if you wish (kind of like those motivational notes in a lunch box).

Problem #2: Not enough time or too tired for intimacy

The Symptoms

One of the symptoms of stale relationships is a stagnant sex life. If you feel so exhausted most days that your bed has become a sacred place for sleep only?no nudity allowed?your relationship might suffer. (There are other causes for libido problems besides time issues or tiredness, such as health issues or having infants, but, if you're anything like me, you're just plain and simple tired and stressed out.)

Solutions

Schedule date nights. As with anything else you want to get done, you have to set aside time for your important appointments. Make intimacy a priority by scheduling a date night at least twice a month. That doesn't sound as sexy as impromptu romantic trysts, but when you've been with someone for years, you know how often those turn up.

Mix it up. Who says you only have to be intimate at night when both of you are spent after a day of toiling at the office?

What You Can Do Right Now

• Send an email to your partner to decide on when your date nights will be and discuss possible plans.
• Make dinner reservations for the first night.
• Find a sitter if needed.
• Mark and share your calendar. (Previously mentioned Cozi is a good family organizer.)
• Order some romantic gifts (Red Envelope has some playful ones), a romantic comedy, or whatever will set the mood for you both.

Problem #3: Money arguments or problems

Money problems are often cited as one of the biggest causes of divorce. Financial compatibility isn't usually apparent at the beginning of a relationship?or it's just often overlooked. Tensions over how to manage and spend money, who controls it, and everything else can really ruin a relationship.

Solutions

Communicate about your finances. When it comes to any problem or major issue, especially finances, communication is key. Even if you're not financially compatible?you're a big spender, she's really frugal?talking openly about money matters is essential to preventing major issues.

The nice thing about money management tools like Mint is you can share an account to both budget together. Previously mentioned The Birdy is another budgeting site you can both use together to track your finances as a team, which is what you are.

CNN has a quiz to find out if you're financially compatible with your spouse. Tools like these aren't very precise evaluators, but they help jump start discussions about money and your financial goals.

If it turns out you and your partner can't see eye to eye about your shared finances, definitely go see an advisor who can provide some neutral advice for the both of you to follow.

What You Can Do Right Now

Problem #4: You've grown apart

Whether you've experienced a culmination of all these things, some of them, or none of them in your relationship, chances are, after all this time, you and your significant other have become two different people than when you first met. For some, this is a problem, but it doesn't have to be.

Solutions

Embrace your changes, while keeping your rituals. Every year my husband and I buy each other some anniversary gift based on the traditional or modern wedding anniversary gift ideas (this year it's tin or aluminum, or diamond jewelry). It's cheesy, but it's a tradition, and I can look back on every one of these objects and remember each year and celebration. I remember the reasons I married him?immutable, essential qualities that will always be there, even if my goals have changed or our relationship has. Establish rituals like these or reminders of the reasons why you first fell in love, then look to appreciate the new people you've become together.

What You Can Do Right Now

• Start making plans for your yearly trip or next celebration.
• Dig out some old photos or mementos. Update your wallpaper or screensaver with them.
• Start keeping a journal (or read your old ones).

It's a Marathon

Julianne Moore in The Kids Are All Right called marriage a marathon (actually, she said "it's a fucking marathon"). These long term relationships take nurturing, but they're well worth it:

I thought it might be helpful to revisit an article I wrote on the Top 10 Tips for Marketing in a Recession in January of 2009. While many of the suggestions still apply and I remain optimistic about the long-term prospects for the U.S. economy, I believe that the economy of today is the new normal in the face of a number of economic hurdles, including high unemployment, international financial unrest and a depression in the real estate market. It is my personal opinion that things wont change significantly, at least until business confidence can be restored with the election of a new President and Congress in the Fall of 2012. These recommendations suggest that while it is necessary to market, you must do so with the idea of slowly maintaining and growing your business, while continuing to overcome a myriad of external challenges.

Starting a Business in a Recession If you are thinking about starting a new business in a recession, you are not alone. Small businesses are often the greatest generators of new jobs. This is one of the reasons why the unemployment rate remains high in the United States. Often, when people are laid off, they take the opportunity to start their own business. However, think hard before you start a business, especially if it is a restaurant or a retailer. For example, the highly competitive restaurant industry sees 27% of restaurant startups fail within the first year, according to a 10-year study by Cornell University and Michigan State University. If you are looking to open a restaurant or retailer, make sure that your business will be unique and that you are confident that there will be a demand for your product or services. Think along the lines of necessities, including health care or products like coffee. For example, think of the Dunkin Donuts and 7-Eleven franchises. Another essential point to keep in mind is that before you start your new business, you must set aside plenty of money for marketing. One of the first overall suggestions I can make is that when choosing whether or not to start a business in a recession, you must identify what the most profitable businesses are and which ones can give you the most competitive advantage. In a recession, consumers require value more than ever. Just look at Walmart, Target and McDonalds. These companies have done relatively well during the recession because of the value they offer consumers. However, there is an exception with high end luxury markets. Although these markets did take a hit early in the recession as real estate values and stock market portfolios declined, they did bounce back. If you can effectively market to wealthier geographies and demographics, you should do so. If your product is a necessity, for consumers or for businesses, then say it is and why it is. For example, Apple did very well during the recession because consumers viewed their products as necessities. Also, if you have products that appeal to children, then make sure you market them effectively. Parents will be more likely to self-sacrifice than to deprive their children, especially when it comes to their education, health and development.

1. Focus on Your Customers If you already have a business or non-profit organization, focus on your current customers and clients. Continue to do what you can to keep your current customers returning and always make sure they are satisfied. If you are a retailer or restaurant, send your customers a gift card or special offer to show your appreciation. If you are a professional, hold the line on your rates, provide volume discounting or some other type of acknowledgement of their patronage. From a marketing perspective, you should periodically send your clients e-newsletters, newsletters, use direct mail and engage them in social media to communicate special offers or news to keep them in the loop. Your next step in marketing your current business should be to focus on your website because this is the online hub of information and content for your organization.

2. Develop Your Website Since you may have extra time now, it is time to focus on your website. Ask yourself: What do I need to do to get higher search engine rankings? The answer is to make sure you have a strong public relations and content creation program, develop your websites on-page optimization and utilize off-page optimization techniques. One tip is to incorporate microsites into your Web strategy. Microsites are essential to maximizing your Web presence and boosting your organizations search engine rankings. Consider building microsites for specific products or services that your company offers. To compliment your website, you may also decide to create a blog. You may need some development help, but once your blog is created and your new sites are set up, you can use your CMS system or Adobe Contribute for sites created in HTML to make changes yourself. The goal for your blog should be to develop excellent content that will compel visitors to return and share with others. We highly recommend providing downloadable content on your site that visitors will be willing to give up an email address or other contact information for.

3. Build Your Social Media Presence It is crucial to share your content and communicate with your audience on appropriate social media platforms. Communicating with friends and followers through social media will help build your networks and engage your current customers. If youre just starting out with social media, focus on the big three: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. If your business is B2C, focus your efforts more on Facebook and Twitter. For B2B companies, LinkedIn should be your first priority. Developing a strong presence on social media websites does require time but it can prove to be an extremely cost-effective way to market your business, which is especially helpful during rough economic times. For example, create a Facebook fan page for your company to communicate with customers and share photos and news. Twitter, the immensely popular micro-blogging network, is an excellent communication outlet to send short messages to a huge audience. LinkedIn is a professional networking site that allows users to rapidly build their connections, browse and post job offerings and share industry expertise with other professionals in their field. Determine which of these social networking sites you should devote your time to and build a strong presence there.

4. Network Old-fashioned networking may also help you build professional contacts and reach potential clients at low cost. If you are a professional, attend networking events in your industry and other trade groups where you may find prospective clients. To demonstrate your position as an expert in your field, professionals can hold original lectures, in-house if possible, to keep costs lower. Retailers and restaurants can hold product demonstrations or workshops. Always promote these events to the public using press releases, social media and e-blasts.

Everything up to this point can be done at low cost. However, often this may not be enough and you will also need to advertise to successfully market your business. In a recession, it is often cheaper to advertise and you may have more leverage. However, always keep in mind that you should never advertise in something solely because it is cheap or within your budget. It is always better to spend more on something that is more likely to work for you. For example, your organization may benefit from targeted ads placed in print outlets, on the Web, through email or on television.

5. Focus Your Print Advertising When using traditional print advertising outlets, make sure that you have the budget to sustain your advertising efforts. If you have a local business, consider using D-Cards and high visibility print ads. To ensure that your advertisements are reaching the right audience, micro-target your ads by placing them in specialty publications. For example, you may want to target a local community by using the front pages of Pennysavers or local newspapers, as well as D-Cards. If your services or products appeal to a specific trade group or demographic, consider specialty publications that service that group. If you need to advertise in a daily newspaper, be sure to put together a catchy ad that is in a high visibility location. In addition, Newsdays daily deals are often good for retailers and those in the hospitality industry.

6. Target Your Web Advertising For those on a budget, I would strongly recommend using Web advertising. As studies repeatedly show, more and more people are turning to online sources when searching for products, services or information. This is why Web advertising is so important when marketing your business. Popular Web advertising outlets include Google AdWords, social media ads, landing pages and daily deal websites.

7. Use Google AdWords Google AdWords lets you create and run text, display or video ads for your business with a custom budget. This is good for marketers on a budget because you will only pay if someone clicks on your advertisement. These ads are displayed under Sponsored Links beside search results when someone searches Google using one of your listed keywords. Google AdWords is so effective because you are advertising to an audience who is already interested in what you have to offer.

8. Advertise with Social Media Social media websites offer highly quantifiable and cost-effective advertisements. Like Google AdWords, you will only pay when someone clicks on your ad. Through social media advertising, you can control your budget, build fans, drive traffic to your website and micro-target based on user demographics, gender, age and interests. For B2C companies, use Facebook Ads to reach your audience. Facebook is able to micro-target based on what users have listed as interests. For B2B organizations, LinkedIn advertising can be effective. LinkedIn offers rich display and text ads that can reach millions of active business professionals. LinkedIn advertising is unique because it can target based on job title.

9. Create Landing Pages A landing page is a single Web page that appears in response to a reader clicking on an advertisement. A landing page is little more than a Web page that contains specific content and can be used as part of an effective Web advertising campaign. When used in a Web advertising campaign, landing pages should provide access to your entire website but the goal here is for the visitor to interact with the content on the page. By offering downloadable content, you provide your audience valuable material in exchange for their contact information. This will help you generate business leads and build your email lists. 10. Use Daily Deals Websites Daily deals websites and phone applications are immensely popular, especially for those with smart phones. These websites and phone apps cater to a vast audience that is interested in obtaining new deals and visiting new venues. Daily deal marketing services such as Groupon and LivingSocial collect users email addresses and send them a featured email every day, offering a heavily discounted deal from a local business. Recipients may buy the coupon, redeem it at the local business and get the product or service they paid for. For example, on Groupon, you and the daily deal site will split the revenues from coupon sales and you will pay nothing upfront to Groupon. Running ad campaigns on sites such as Groupon and LivingSocial can prove to be hugely beneficial in attracting customers to your business, especially if you are in the restaurant or hospitality industry or offer some kind of service to your guests.

11. Use Take-Over Emails Your business can benefit by using take-over emails in your email advertising strategy. Take-over emails allow you to take advantage of another organizations broad email list. For example, Newsday and other publications offer take-over emails for $50 per thousand, meaning they will send out your email for you to their audience. When creating your email advertisement, make sure that the most important information appears at the top, under the fold of the email, and that you have a compelling title that will encourage your readers to read more. Include links to landing pages, your website, social media profiles and contact information.

12. Advertise on Television Sometimes, you may need to reach large numbers of people in a short time frame. Under these circumstances, I would highly recommend considering television advertising. When advertising on television, it is important to narrow your target audience by using specific programming. Consider upcomers like FiOS, for example. If you are looking to reach businesspeople or wealthier viewers, consider advertising on CNBC or news channels. If your business product or service is catered to women, choose to advertise on channels such as Lifetime, WE or HGTV.
